It wouldn't have been quite so bad if:

A) I had had a military (hey, I only had 15 dwarves and it was only year 2)
and
B) I hadn't protected my fortress entirely with weapon traps (kobolds have TRAPAVOID)


So they just marched in and killed almost everybody, and wounded all but 2 of the rest. I did finally drive them off.. but at what cost? Everybody's tantruming.

Kobolds are just annoying. I was thinking of deleting them altogether. I know I would have to gen a new world, but are there any other problems?

I'm not sure what they were using, but they had some sort of missile weapon. They peppered most of my people with it. The miners are probably what turned the tide, though one died and the other was wounded.

Oh, yeah, bows and crossbows are overpowered.

I had a squad of 10 novice wrestlers with wood shields and leather armor get killed by gobbos. My two legendary miners with no armor killed em all.

Also, in history, archers were much more powerful than axe users and such. In DF, archers are much more powerful if they can shoot but not be hit. Makes sense, me thinks.

Wrestling may seem cool, but if you ask me, using weapons is just smarter and better. Also, wood sheilds and should be better against bows and spears. Of course a sword or blunt weapon could just go right through it, but it should at least be able to stop arrows and spearheads.

I only had wrestlers due to the fact that I got like 40 immigrants in one year, so the army was just a small precaution. I much prefer cage traps than a straight army.

I recomend just building a wall/moat/bridge. Most effective defense against everything that can't fly, and if something can, just build a huuuuuuuuuuuge roof.

Doesn't actually work like that, in most cases. A well made shield can stop anything you throw at it, if you use it right. If you use it wrong, or are just unlikely, anything will go through it. For instance, having an arrow punch through your shield and lodge in your forarm is no fun at all.

I just made 10 wood shields at the carpenter workshop to keep him busy.

Crossbows were made to have the power to go through chainmail and even plate armor.
