Yes, but those were special crossbows known as arbalest, and they were basically the (dwarven) Ballastae's lil' brudder. The medieval Knight in full plate was the tank, and to counter that, the Arbalast was the medieval TOW launcher.

Lesser crossbows could be reloaded faster, but did much less hurt. Not that they still woulden't kill a Knight if you somehow managed to get one through his visor.

And plus if you are having so much trouble with early attacks do what I do and start the game with 29 dogs.

Dogs. Keep it within reasonable limits, they breed like...cats. A designated animal trainer. A clother. A planter. Pig tails. Lots of them.
Get your pig tail production up and running, and fast. Throw your clothier into rope production. Get yourself a nice long hallway studded with many two to three tile recesses. Start designating restraints. Make a hallway of canid death. Keep some dogs free-roaming. Assign the remainder to your outdoorsy dwarves. Suddenly, you will begin noticing the kobolds only when your dwarves leave to claim a shiny new filth encrusted loincloth for themselves. Or when they get lucky and shoot your legendary woodcutter in the face. Something really has to be done about that.

So 29 dogs letting roam free with a deicated animal trainer to train them to war dogs was not a good idea?

I was about to start with a quote saying "what he said", but then I remembered exactly how fast the population would baloon. It's mostly a matter of how good your processing power is and how much you mind cluttered hallways/dogs sitting on dining room tables. How anal you are about their positioning and how much you want to protect your woodcutters, fishers, herbalists and what have you are also considerations.

The soldier might die before the dogs get close enough to actually fight. Also, he'll get more unhappy each time one of the dogs dies. They'll also trample the hell out of grass.  :P

I've gotta find a good way to host images; I've got screen caps from where my Engraver got through wrestling a Kobold, and had a grey wound to the head. When I went to investigate, I found [Large Copper Dagger -  Stuck in Head] in his inventory.

That's dwarf tough.

No. Not only do "normal" crossbows have the strength to punch holes in plate armor - so do longbows and composite bows. Plate armor isn't some magical impenetrable forcefield.

In response to the OP:  AFAIK only kobold thieves avoid traps as an inherent "class" bonus.  Kobolds do not have the TRAPAVOID token (or at least they didn't in previous versions).  I haven't had a kobold ambush in so long I can't recall what they send to ambush you.  I assumed they sent bowmen, who shouldn't avoid traps.

They damn well do have [TRAPAVOID]. Right in between [LOCKPICKER] and [FLEEQUICK]

2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

This is why I'm building a huge wall around my entire fortress.
And digging a moat around the wall with a drawbridge
And filling the moat with lava

Make friends with the butcher's workshop ;) You just need to learn to cull the population to manageable levels.
