World creation option: Stop Gen Now.
« on: July 16, 2008, 09:25:05 am »

I suggest that there be an ability to stop world gen at a certain point.
I suggest the following command structure for this.
"Space"
   - Enter to resume
   - X to cancel world gen
   - F to finish world gen here.

Yeah, I have been wondering why there isn't an option like that.

Greetings!

Yes, I am also in favor of this. World generation speed decreases via a hardly predictable curve, so you may feel at some point that waiting another 3 hours just to reach 20 more years is not really worth it and want to stop world gen at 1030 rather than 1050.

Or you see that you are still in the age of legends and have some interesting roads connecting lots of cities already.

Actually, I find it odd that we get a preview of what the world looks like while at the same time we can't really take advantage of that.

So, I can only say "pretty, pretty please" about this option.

For now, someone in another thread suggested that if you find a scenario you like earlier in your legends, you can use the same set of seeds but set the end date where you want it.

So if you originally genned to 1050, but want to play in 500, just set the end year to 500 and re-gen.

I think having to hit spacebar at just the right moment is too random.  Rerunning with an earlier stop time (precise) is what we want; that feature could be better streamlined, though.  Let us stop, rewind, and go forward in the world generation, then game can handle rerunning up to the time we picked.

Hi!

So if you originally genned to 1050, but want to play in 500, just set the end year to 500 and re-gen.

That solution does not help if the problem is that a random seed world which started at a pleasant rate goes down to 10 minutes per year generated - with still 50 years to go! If the process is aborted prematurely, the seed is unretrievably lost, so rerunning with a new target age is impossible.

As nice as this option is, the use for it would be limited if you couldn't tell what the current status of the world was at a glance. And since exporting history occurs at the end of worldgen, it would limit it.

Hi!

There are still a lot of things you can see at a glance.

First of all, medium or large worlds seem to always undergo the following cycles:

Age of Myths - nearly all megabeasts and demons alive

Age of Legends - a good part of megabeasts and demons alive

Age of Heroes - just a few megabeasts and demons alive

(After that the political constellation seems to dictate whether we get a golden age or a twilight age, I think).

So, the age already tells you how many megabeasts and demons there are.
Then, you have the counts for historical figures alive/dead and the event counter.
Except for the earliest years, it is reasonable to assume that a very high fluctuation in deaths and events indicates at least one active war.

Finally, the part of the map you see can also tell you a lot. I am not sure what the color changing of goblin fortresses means, but there are quite a few things you can see even there: Roads, for instance, indicating a certain level of development; ruins; roads between elven retreats indicating that they have been conquered by humans; the area around elven retreats continuously losing its trees also indicates conquest by humans or dwarves.

So, depending on what you are looking for, even with the indicators we have right now, finding the right time to stop is possible, I think.

Hi!

I am not sure what the color changing of goblin fortresses means

Deathworks

The Pink goblin fortresses are more populous than the gray ones.

Light gray Dwarven halls are more populous than dark gray ones.

Elven forest retreats with the ¶ symbol are more populous than ones with the î symbol.

From least to most populous, the human cities go like this:
µ -> * -> # -> ☼

I don't know, being able to pause world gen or scroll the view might be nice.  Don't you ever wonder what the map looks like other than the top left corner?

I agree about the scrolling map, but what is this about top left corner? During world creation, once history starts, the map focuses on towns/fortresses/retreats/halls switching about once a century... Or do you mean before history starts?

The u symbol is only used for ruins, I've seen elvish retreats become ruins when destroyed too.

Scrolling and stoppage are in now.  Things like rewind/fast-forward aren't really practical without a lot of extra storage or a completely different way of doing things.
