Official balance mod
« on: July 16, 2008, 04:38:51 am »

As a community we must develop official balance mod.
For example Blizzard game dev company has a huge group of people who spend time only balancing game.
Toady doesnt have a time for balance weapons and monsters so we must help him.

I would love to see more variety of monsters in caves and wilderness.
Bows suck in adventure mod. Other weapons are too weak also.

I see two problems that would arise from this...

1: New releases would generate new difficulties and events that cannot be anticipated, making "balance" futile.

2:What is balance? Is a fort with lots of wood and gems and no metal balanced against a fort with lots of ore but little else? Do you give every fort the same materials seeing as they are technically balanced against one another? Or are we talking primarily about combat here? "Balance" isn't exactly easy to define, particularly in a game that has no end.

"Balance" is when the game acts in such a way that playing it is difficult and fun at the same time.

I wasn't trying to alter balance, specifically, but seeing as DF is inherently "difficult", I wanted to add more "fun" to it, creating the Martial Arts mod. There are a lot of mods out there, you can choose anything you deem fun. There's no need to enforce a specific mod layout on players, because this isn't starcraft or some MMORPG, we don't explicitly compete with each other.

The problem with "Balance" as in WoW and "Balance" as in DF is one that isn't easily solved.

Dwarves and elves aren't balanced. Elves can only use wooden armor, have stock wooden weapons, have a worse armor class, get no martial trance, are frikken pansies, live in trees, faint at the sight of hewed wood, and suck. All they get in return is they hit a bit harder and move faster. Dwarves have steel equips, have a better armor class, get the matrix martial trance that lets them go all Neo on enemies, life in bad-ass volcanos, drink entire barrels of beer and rum at one go, and wear kitten bone amulets.

There's no way to balance awesome with ... elf.

The Dungeon Master goes around pantsless, wearing like fifty cloaks, he's clearly unstable, and I wouldn't ask him too many questions.  You might set him off.

DF  in space!

Elves eat people.  I think it's time we stop acting like they're weaklings.

Then DF is balanced :)
