Very small caves appearing in adventure mode
« on: July 16, 2008, 03:26:28 am »

So, I set up a custom world, told it to add more caves and make them visible, and then went adventuring in search of a suitable place to build a fort. Thing is, every cave I go into is tiny, usually one or two z levels. The megabeasts are apparently around somewhere, but I can't get to them. Anyone else having a problem with very small caves?

I've noticed that

a) caves seem to be a lot smaller
b) megabeasts can quite often be found on the surface outside their caves (including in 39b)

These are all good things.  If you really can't find the beast, (T)ravel away a few squares and back, then try again.

Okay. I assumed that the cave generation was fubar'd and the poor megabeasts were entombed deep below me, under hundreds of tons of rock, never to feel the sweet kiss of my <Steel Battle Axe>

You can set it so that caves can get bigger, but you can't change the minimum size. Your maximum size is probably 25 (which is the default), which isn't very big at all.

I'm pretty content with the caves getting smaller. It prevents the pointless walking about in empty caves for about half an hour only to get killed in one hit by the thing you were looking for. Of course, the better alternative would be to have more different encounters and treasure lying about.

I like some of the small caves.  I found one that was home only to five ratmen and a named wolf, and I managed to clear it out without too much wandering about.

I found a cave that was just a single L-shaped corridor, with two troglodytes in it.

The other cave I visited was home to a giant. There were random craft goods and hunks of meat strewn around on the surface.

This is good. Less pointless, painfully boring wandering around in circles. Now we just need ramps rather than carved stairs.

Yeah, this is intentional.  Quests were hard to finish, and the large caves weren't really interesting because there isn't anything special about them yet, in terms of environmental features and population-specific/altered features.  As mentioned, you can up the size in params if you want the larger ones again.  I think you'd change it from 25 -> 300 or so.

If that Arc isn't anytime soon, I'd appreciate various entrances that corresponded to different size caves: small, medium and large.  Perhaps a larger cave would have a larger initial entrance or something.

Why? The size of a cave entrance has very very little to do with the size of the cave itself.

Small caves are good, but why there are fresh meat all around in case of megabeasts? It should be dry-cured at least, and just a few pieces. There should be a LOT of bones and skulls instead. Giants could have some skins on the floor.

It's probably fresh meat that they stole from towns over the years.  It doesn't age the stolen items at this time.

Quick fix for that, make it so that the game doesn't bother placing any food or drink items. Since, assumedly, it gets eaten shortly after being stolen.

Having found the size 25 caves just a bit too dull, after a bit of experimentation I've found that size 75 seems to meet the right balance between interesting and tedious. YMMV of course.
