Yeah, only way to beat them is through numbers - it seems.

I usually dont like having alot of Axemen and Swordsmen around, but the only way to make it alone is if you're a ranged combatant.

My last adventurer got his head smashed in on the first hit, he only wore a thong though.

I went after a giant and he pulled off my steel right gauntlet and hit me once with it in the lower body, killing me.  I tried to go back for vengeance, but couldn't find the cave and was then torn apart by a giant eagle.
Let me see if I read this right... the giant ripped the gauntlet off of your fist, then used that to smack you in the twins, and hit you so hard it killed you? Friggin' OUCH!

I love this game!

This is when ninja skills really come in handy.  ;)

I've killed plenty of giants with just-starting-out adventurers in this newer version (of course, I've died a lot too). Take a piercing weapon like a spear or a sword. Turn off charging and set yourself to dodge everything. Make sure you start out with skill not only in shields and armour, but also the weapon (so you can hit and damage the guy).

If I'm lucky, the weapon can do critical damage to internal organs within the first few hits. Normally what happens though is we dance around each other, poking until either he bashes my head in or I either break a limb or get the weapon stuck inside the enemy.

If you break a limb, fight until he gets exhausted or passes out from the pain. If you get the weapon embedded, just grab the weapon as often as you can (you'll lose your grip a lot) and twist until he passes out from the pain. Once that happens, you've won.

Try not to burden yourself as speed is quite important.

Weaponmasters and champions are far more deadly. Much worse than demons.

p.s: if you sell off all your clothing in an armour store when you start, you can usually afford to buy a better shield or platemail. It's quite useful.

Hmmmm. That's nice, but I'd also suggest grinding your wrestling on some animals first, because you simply do NOT use piercing weapons without any insurance against stuckins. Those will kill you dead.

It seems like one reason giants etc are tougher now is their wrestling attacks are nastier.  Is that because they use wrestling more, or because holds/breaks have been rebalanced?  ANyways, right now if a giant gets ahold of a limb it will snap it like a toothpick.

Klendt: Stuckins are the whole reason why that strategy works since twisting a weapon is so unbalanced right now  :P. I was casually referring to if you wanted to take a totally new adventurer to go kill megabeasts. Of course, it would be easier to just train on smaller creatures first (I noticed that the moment you get "skilled" in your weapon, the megabeasts are pathetic).

Yeah, stuckins are a bit of an exploit because you can kill someone as quickly by twisting a spear in their hand as by twisting one in their head or torso, because they cause the same amount of bleeding and pain.  Presumably that'll be improved at some point.

Personally, I prefer to play "real", ie not chucking beetles etc.  Taking a handful of ex-adventurers on a mission is really exciting, and some of the battles have been epic.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

I fought a dragon that wasnt all that tough. From my little band of warriors he only killed one elf and crippled another.

I'm making it the goal of my current character to kill a cave with 5 or 6 big dragons with hundreds of kills each.  I brought along a team of titans and ONE of these dragons ate all the titans in just a few actions.  They're MUCH more hardcore now than they used to be.

I am pretty sure Toady is planning to revamp the quest system eventually.

Still, I would like to see simple quests for beginning characters, such as errant quests (carrying a message or item to someplace else), [crafting] quests, [political] quests ( ][ means "once implemented"), trade quests, hunting of ordinary animals such as the already mentioned wolf pack, and of course assassination or megabeast hunting quests - maybe even quests to help build a house or castle, that would be pretty interesting.

As an adventure-mode-only-player, I hope Toady will, once he gets to it, implement all these neat things. But I am pretty optimistic at that.

PS: Already found another quest type. I call it "lazy suicide" (why did the guards try to kill me afterwards? It's not like I was not asked to kill her - by nothing less than The Touchy Nations themselves! Touchy people, that bunch..):

lol, did you notice their last names were different?  :P

Also, I've got a pair of adventurers (I consider them to be Master and Apprentice, retired my amazing legendary sword 'n board fighter, then made another one and had him recruit him) and they've been going around slaughtering everything they see. They once took out 5 giants, all with 50+ kills, lol.

One of the names is translated, the other isn't.

Indeed. The speaking character's name is always displayed in the lang_xxx.txt translation, but when they refer to someone else, it's always the translation. Also, after killing her, I got the quest to talk to her to gain my reward. Rather hard to accomplish, that is.

first, go to the HFS, then kill your self in attempt to go to the Other World.

Then talk to him again, and then try to kill yourself again to go back to That World

Ohhh man, that never occurred to me.  Once planes are introduced, will we go to an afterlife when we die?

That would rule.
