Arming Your Companions
« on: July 16, 2008, 12:49:01 am »

So, it's been about forever since I've played Adventure Mode with any companions, as drunks are fairly shoddy company.  Now that the new version is out and retired adventurers will always join you, I've started up an Oregon Trail edition of DF using some of my friends. (I call it "Oregon Trail edition" because, of course, one of the best parts of OT was watching your friends die from snakebites and dysentery. The same principles apply here.)

During a recent battle, my Axeman lodged his weapon in the giant before getting knocked out; when the giant died, and the Axeman reawakened, he didn't get his axe back (there was another guy sitting on top of the corpse that wouldn't move for some reason). I traveled and came back, and the axe was still there (now in my inventory), but I have no idea how to get it back in the hands of the Axeman.

What are my options? Is there a trick to get the axe back into his hands, is there a command I've missed, or do I require a series of retires/restarts/pick up/re-retire/resume to get him rearmed? Is there any way I can make him stop following me short of death, and maybe just make him the leader of the next crew when this batch gets killed off?

tl;dr How do I give an item to a follower?

Yup.

Although, Wrestler companions can be quite awesome. As a bonus, he might grab an axe off one of his opponents in battle.

Damnit. The last time I retired my group so I could make a couple replacements, two of them somehow teleported themselves halfway around the planet. I had to walk them both all the way back and lost one to wolves in the process.

Speaking of which, any idea why that might have occurred? The others' legends clearly show them "settling in Joyclinches", but those two don't show them settling down. Did their wanderlust somehow move them that far between adventurers or what?
