Dwarven Language
« on: July 15, 2008, 10:56:45 pm »

Couple of Qs about the DF Dwarven language:

1. Is there any sort of Dwarven-languag glossary / dictionary / grammar somewhere out there?

2. If not, would anyone object to me trying to make one?

Yeah, knew about the /raw file; just wondering if there's anything documented about Dwarven grammar, sentence structure, etc.

(Any info ToadyOne himself could provide on that subject would be especially appreciated.)

(Yeah, I'm sort of an anorak about little details like these ;) )

As it stands now there are no sentences in Dwarven, because it has no verbs whatsoever. The only, "verbs" would be found in a dwarf's surname, (such as singclasp). You won't find can, will, does, or any of the most basic words in sentence composition besides "The" and "Of".

Edit: You can find "will" and "can", ironicially, except they're nouns.

I think people IRL would misinterpret if I called them a "nuggadoggez".

Toady might eventually bring language into the game, where your character has a chance of understanding any word based on his familiarity with the language. Stupid characters would have low familiarity with even their own language, resulting in:

I lost my blah blah to the titan Worldhammer. He lives east of the blah mountains.

But otherwise you'd get the speech in Elvish and it would translate certain phrases to English, if the character understood them. And if you got enough phrases together you could assume what he said ...

And you'd have a chance of miscommunicating phrases to people who speak a language you're not good with or they they're not good with.

Too complicated? You're playing a game that creates its own worlds with history every 10 minutes.
