Though all this doesn't explain why giants and ettins are so common even after 1050 years while all the major baddies died off 1049 years ago.
Ettins and giants are semimegabeasts, aren't they? I thought semimegabeasts could breed.

Which returns to my idea... let ALL these beasts breed :)

I say mod the game to let the beast breed that way you could be siting nicly in your wooden fort when an army of 10 dragons attack you.

Wait, can't you just give them superstats, generate the world, and then change the stats back to normal?

updates to the raws only take effect on a new world

Adding or deleting creatures requires a new world. Editing will work on the same world as long as you make sure to delete the files in data/objects.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I've changed the raws and had them affect creatures without deleting data/objects. I think the game recompiles if it see differences, or something. Granted it was always just a few tag changes or adding one tag, but I dunno.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Bronze Collossi don't last very long because their main power over other Megabeasts was special abilities such as No Bleed, No Pain, no exhaust, and their lack of Organs to strike. (Also I think they are hardcoded to recover even faster then ordinary megabeasts)

The World Gen doesn't take that into account hense why the Bronze Collosi die off against the first Dwarf they fight.

I think Toady needs to see this. This wouldn't be a huge fix or one that would take much more time in world-gen, it would simply need to look for any combat-related abilities and factor them into the fight.

They don't breed in worldgen though.

There should be a megabeast breeding cycle. Every x number of years they gather to breed. The females will then go into hiding until her clutch of baby-megabeasts are ready to emerge into the world.

I like the idea of megabeasts being ancient and powerful enemies that have been there since the beginning of civilization that adventurers (is you!) can fight and kill, and eventually and slowly wipe out. The problem is that they're wiped instantly by a few random dudes at worldgen, not that there aren't enough of them.

There should always be a few megabeasts around.  Letting them breed would be wise ... assuming their lifecycle is longer than normal, they would breed once every hundred years or so.  People could give quests to kill eggs, larva, immature or half-grown forms of megabeasts to save civilisations from trouble in a few years' time.  Dwarves in DF could unearth ancient nests with several dragon eggs, which can mostly be destroyed, but could hatch at any time.

But if an area has no megabeasts, one should eventually settle in (generated on the fly) to fill the vacaum.  While I think that it should be theoretically possible to drive a species into extinction, this should be a titanically difficult ordeal.

Is anyone else confused at the prospect of reproducing bronze collosi?

I think breeding makes more sense for some creatures than others. In the meantime, I think it would be fine to just let them breed slowly (if that's feasible), but in the future I think it should depend on what they are.

For instance, I can see dragons and hydras breeding, but bronze colossi being created by other means, perhaps by other creatures via magic. Obviously, this sort of thing would be far enough in the future of DF, but it's a thought.
