NPC dwarven settlements
« on: July 15, 2008, 11:37:43 am »

Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to DF and the forums, so I apologise if this has been asked before but there's so much info to plough through I'm sure you'll forgive me ;)

I tried creating a dwarven adventurer so I could visit some of my old forts, and I've found the the NPC dwarven settlements are very confusing. They tend to be massive, sprawling corridors with empty rooms and a few peasants and guards running around. Finding the mayor so that I can receive a quest is impossible. They often lack stairs and only have downward slopes, so my hero ends up having to take a tumble every time he wants to go down a level. They also have really strange entrances that make them very hard to get into.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem, and whether there was any word of a revamp? I found with human settlements I could easily go right to the mayor, pick up a quest and be out of there. The houses were properly furnished and seemed "logical". With my dwarf character I spent an hour in three settlements running around empty corridors trying to find someone who wasn't a peasant or guard. No luck.

Unfortunetely, in current version dwarven and elven settlements look like that. In the future they will propably be redone from the scratch (I think it belongs to Bustling Town Arc).

Ah that's a shame, I had hoped it was just a bug with my world gen. Never mind; I'll stick to being a human adventurer for now and try a dwarf out in a later version.

How are you tumbling down ramps? Are you alt moving off the ramps? Don't do that.

You can only go down a ramp from on top of a wall tile next to the ramp. In other words, go around to the other side of the ramp and walk down.

Never had a problem with the entrances myself, but yeah. Dwarf towns are not nearly as newbie friendly as human towns. Elf towns can be tricky too, but theres usually a horde of elves just standing around the druid.

A good way to fix this, which i read on this forum, is to edit the raw entity file to make dwarves and elves live in cities like humans do. Now, you can buy steel in dwarven shops!

You can still play a dwarf, just run to the nearest human area to actually operate out of.  Armor & clothing won't always fit, but you can get some bolts for your crossbow, food, and other items (like buying an extra waterskin or two - for the caves).

You can also find kidnapped dwarves that have been assimilated into a gobbo lifestyle - you can kill them for some steel armor & weapons sometimes.

Ah, that's a possibility. I had tried going down from both sides, but maybe I had to approach from the top or bottom bit. The slopes were always set up in a vertical strip, so I didn't think of trying the top or bottom bit.

Another possibility, though I'd rather dwarves maintained their underground mines for thematic reasons. I'm glad to hear they'll receive some loving at some point though, and to be honest I forgot that DF is still an alpha anyway. It's so deep sometimes it's hard to believe that it's only partially complete.

I usually make dwarves and elves to live in towns if I want to buy their weapons in adv. mode.

Are the arrows fixed for the current version? Are they being sold now?
