So many Giants
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:14:13 pm »

Wow, all I can say is wow. Thanks a bunch toady one, I have just generated a custom pocket world with ridiculously high cave settings. I also turned on the setting that allows me to see caves in the area selection screen. The result, a world with about 50 bajillion giants. I love it, I have settled in cave area's about 8 times now. Each time within a month all seven starting dwarves are ripped apart by about 5 giants.

Heres a picture:

I don't care if this update is slightly buggy, I am loving every minute of it.

Hah, I get it, to overcome the sleep-death, you're getting your dwarves killed BEFORE they can sleep.
By a gaggle of giants, no less.
Seriously, that's a hell of a lot of giants for one fortress.

In one of my worlds giants are the only quest beasts I have.

It might be a bug. I'm getting the same thing as well. When I pump up the cave numbers, all I get are giants too.

Hi!

I am not sure (after all, with pocket worlds, all guesses are off), but maybe giants are currently the fittest monsters around? I mean, we currently have a balance problems with megabeasts not even lasting until the first humans die of old age, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was simply a case of all other monsters getting extinct before you start adventuring ... I guess you could verify this in the legend screen looking for any non-giants there...

I had a 'giant rampage' in the legends screen, but it was TWO giants rampaging together.

AWESOME.

Heres a thought, maybe because there's more than one giant in one place at one time, maybe they'll actually get a chance to breed. At least when Toady does the lifecycles during normal play arc. Course, since they're intelligent they might need to get 'married' for that to work.

Also, can has settings?

Man, giants are crazy too.

I've seen a bunch of them so far.  They're everywhere.  This one just punched my crossbowman companion so hard his head exploded.

That guy had a wife, man!  I talked to her, she was the high priestess!  Now I'm gonna have to go tell her I led her husband to a horrible death in a dank cave!  I brought her his crossbow, I hope it doesn't have any of his blood on it.

The first world I generated in .39 had this one town that kept getting attacked by giants.  The last attack had 17 giants in it.  17!!

Anyway, I think the giants are so successful because they work in groups and because they mostly just steal stuff rather than try to kill people.

I killed 5 zombie giants... in a pocket world (albeit with increased cave settings >.>)

Log rejects. You can do that by changing something in the init. You can tell read that a see the reasons for the rejects. You may have to change the parameters. Make sure the parameters are in the range specified below. You also might have a large amount of rejects and still get a good world. My large world had over 2000 rejects before it found a good world

Aww, poor girl. Put her out of misery by shooting her with her husband's crossbow.
