Miasma, how long does it take?
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:30:17 pm »

I'm trying to drive some recruits insane. They're walled in a small-ish area, stuck on patrol for awhile already, so I'm dropping animals into the hole to make miasma and make them unhappy. How long does miasma usually take? And any way to speed up their unhappiness?

Any single unhappiness source does not stack with itself.  I think miasma couldn't be more than -5 or so (on a 100 point scale, isn't it?) so you'll need to find another way to make them crazy.  Or rather, multiple other ways.  There's a list of things that make people unhappy on the wiki...somewhere.

I can't do most of those right now, they're sleeping in rocks, have had animals fall down and die right next to them, have a puppy limping around with a bunch of red injuries, with everything being at LEAST yellow, as well as being on patrol for a long time(Which is in their thoughts)

I don't know if I read it correctly, but if the rotting object is outside with no roof above, it will not produce miasma.

There's a roof above it, well a hatch but it's still marked inside.

That's not quite true, some unhappiness effects will stack.  Not sure which ones, but export mandates definitely stack.

How about defining the shaft as a pond and dumping buckets of water on them?  That way they wind up sleeping in the mud.  If you want to crank it up another notch set up a catapult nearby and have your siege operators start practice while they are sleeping. And of course you should treat them like nobility - Let them eat XXTroutXX

If you try the hated vermin in a cage thing, remember to forbid the vermin so they don't relieve their discomfort with indigestion.

Do active pumps make noise?  A windmill-driven pump would be easier on your work force than siege engines.  AFAIK the volume of the noise only affects the distance it annoys sleepers.  It doesn't affect the magnitude of the thought.

I did, but I didn't even think of that until you said it.
