Tweaking default colors
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:06:26 pm »

So, the new version came out and for some reason only now I realised that the default Dwarf Fortress colors suck. That's because these are the same colors that Windows XP console colors uses by default. Back in 2006 I posted a fix for this on rec.games.roguelike.misc:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.roguelike.misc/browse_thread/thread/f0237b82d80b7911/dca78ebec84a78b2

But wait, Dwarf Fortress doesn't use Windows XP console! Fortunately we can change the colors in init.txt:

[BLACK_R:0]
[BLACK_G:0]
[BLACK_B:0]
[BLUE_R:0]
[BLUE_G:0]
[BLUE_B:153]
[GREEN_R:0]
[GREEN_G:153]
[GREEN_B:0]
[CYAN_R:0]
[CYAN_G:153]
[CYAN_B:153]
[RED_R:153]
[RED_G:0]
[RED_B:0]
[MAGENTA_R:153]
[MAGENTA_G:0]
[MAGENTA_B:153]
[BROWN_R:192]
[BROWN_G:102]
[BROWN_B:0]
[LGRAY_R:192]
[LGRAY_G:192]
[LGRAY_B:192]
[DGRAY_R:102]
[DGRAY_G:102]
[DGRAY_B:102]
[LBLUE_R:51]
[LBLUE_G:51]
[LBLUE_B:255]
[LGREEN_R:51]
[LGREEN_G:255]
[LGREEN_B:51]
[LCYAN_R:0]
[LCYAN_G:255]
[LCYAN_B:255]
[LRED_R:255]
[LRED_G:51]
[LRED_B:51]
[LMAGENTA_R:255]
[LMAGENTA_G:0]
[LMAGENTA_B:255]
[YELLOW_R:255]
[YELLOW_G:255]
[YELLOW_B:0]
[WHITE_R:255]
[WHITE_G:255]
[WHITE_B:255]

I'm not sure about brown - it can't be too dark, and it shouldn't clash with dark red. This one looks more like orange than anything, but the intro movie looks really sweet.

I think I'll stick with the default colors.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Did you make this scheme yourself or is it one of the ones from the wiki. If it is from the wiki, which scheme is it? If it is not from the wiki, would you be able to put up a screen cap displaying the scheme so I can see what it looks like?

Looks nice, with the exception of the hella-orange pretending to be brown.

I had a color comparison picture laying around for tweaking my own colors, so I plopped his in. Here she be:

The top left grid is the default colors. Note that the dwarf colors aren't entirely accurate -- their beards are tinted, so they should be slightly darker -- but it's close enough.

I should probably post my color scheme some day... or maybe I already have? I don't remember.

(Edit: Added spoiler tags because the image is distracting.)

My only changes:

[BLUE_R:64]
[BLUE_G:64]
[BLUE_B:192]

[LBLUE_R:128]
[LBLUE_G:128]
[LBLUE_B:255]

Absolutely cannot see default blue-on-black to save my life :(

If you don't like either the puke-brown or the orange-posing-as-brown, try:

[BROWN_R:128]
[BROWN_G:96]
[BROWN_B:0]

or

[BROWN_R:160]
[BROWN_G:112]
[BROWN_B:64]

My personal favourite brown is

[BROWN_R=117]
[BROWN_G=76]
[BROWN_B=0]

It looks especially good on black.

Here are my colors. They're a modification of (Yet) Another scheme from the wiki.

And the picture for them:
