Trade Depot Trouble
« on: July 13, 2008, 06:27:03 pm »

Hey.  I'm having a problem here with my Trade Depot, in that according to the Wiki it should be fine.  However, it obviously isn't.  My Trade Depot is built one Z-Layer below the rest of my base, and while it has a three wide path to it, my shift-D tells me that the Depot is inaccessible.  How can I find where the problem is?
Incidentally, a function for shift-D that did exactly that would be a HUGE timesaver.

Follow the green trail from your trade depot to where it turns red, also AFAIK wagons will NOT go down stairs, just ramps.

Ok, the wierd thing is that the Green line ends for no apparent reason.  It's just before the ramps leading up, and it's still three tiles wide.  Nothing else APPEARS to have changed either.

Can you take a pic of it, maybe then we could spot the problem (sometimes you overlook something even when you looked right at it)

If it's inndoors, three tiles wide and ramps are built like they're supposed to I haven't got a clue of what might be wrong... maybe a screenshot would help.

edit: what Doppel said...

Try making the hall 5 tiles wide.

Maybe there's a tree or boulder blocking the path?

Some other impassable tile, like a statue?

If the path is next to a wall, it's also inaccessible.

The path only needs to be 3 wide. Maybe the ramps down are too close to the trade depot?

I've had similar issues with a depot in an old fort. In it I had the depot 3 z-levels below the entrance. Apparently, traders have issues with going down multiple ramps and turning the corner no matter how wide I made the hall or the room around the depot, in the end I had to go up and build it outside :( Really sucks too, I had great plans for an elf trap...

You can kill elves outside: In my actual fortress, the TRade Depot is in a room called the bath tub. When the elves are in, I just fill it with water.

The green line may only need to be 3x3, but the path should be 5x5. I've had problems with that when I walled myself in and had a drawbridge as a gatehouse, the tiles next to the walls were inaccessible, hence my earlier suggestion of widening the path.

The green line actually only needs to be one tile, which happens in a 3x3 path. Shift-D to where it stops, and you'll probably find either a tree or a boulder in the way. Cut down the tree or smooth the boulder and you should be fine. (Smoothing the boulders took me forever to work out!)

If the path looks like this (side view):

Code: [Select]
_
 ^
  ^
   ^_

Then wagons can't get down.  You need to intersperce the ramps, like so:

Code: [Select]
_
 ^_
   ^_
     ^_

Actually, I've made a solid ramp path before, and wagons had very little trouble going down it... But it was only on the side of the mountain, rather than underground.
