Genericified window suggestion
« on: July 13, 2008, 11:12:03 am »

I am phrasing this as such to be the least contentious as possible..

I would suggest to you that maybe my playing experience would be enhanced (and perhaps some others') if I were able to specify what I wanted the game's screen size to be in grid squares as well as pixels.  For example right now I have (est) 78x23 playable squares.  If I could override these numbers to whatever I wanted (with minimums so that menus do not need adjustment), and I deal with what the resolution needs to be to accommodate these squares given whatever tile set I am using.

I'm not suggesting to change any defaults.  I'm not specifically talking about whether or not to use custom tilesets.  I'm just suggesting that I'd be happier if I could select my number of tiles.

/hope I avoided any religious wars
//emacs sucks

I don't care if it's in the bloats, I'll second the basic idea anyway.  I ususally ignore the suggestion area because its always stuff thats come up a dozen times before, but the one interface change would truly improve playablity is just being able to see more of the area at once.

That was easier to fake than I thought it'd be.

I'd say it definately needs to be done. When, I'm not entirely sure. It's not exactly game-breaking at this stage. But it needs to be done. Monitors are big for a reason- To see dwarves splatter across your entire map without having to scroll.

That's great.  When I was search around the forum I wasn't sure if the message was making it over the noise.

Isn't basically the only reason that this isn't already done is because the game is based on the curses library, which has a fixed tile count or something like that?

It doesn't use Curses any more, but I'd bet that a lot of the code does assume a fixed window size.

I think Toady has mentioned in a forum post somewhere that making the tile dimensions of the screen adjustable was one of the first things to do in the Presentation Arc, even before full tileset support.  Probably because it'll take less work.
