A suggestion about temples and "evil" gods
« on: July 13, 2008, 03:11:57 am »

The thing about it is that I find it very odd that these human towns have open, joyful temples dedicated to death, disease, and murder. I would highly suggest adding "darker" temple elements to this at least. At least make the engravings worse.

I would have to also suggest that once town "alignment" is initiated, evil temples could exist, but they would be hidden, underground or even in the wilderness etc in good areas. Good temples would be hidden in evil areas, and evil temples are free and open in an evil society. Of course, Toady probably already thought of this. :D

"joyful temples dedicated to death, disease, and murder."

Well it very well may be that they are trying to appease these "Evil" gods who may actually like bright temples. The Aztec Temples to gods that cause major disasters were rather beautiful rather then black with skeletons haunting the place. Heck a good sacrifice, a person or even fruit, to the god of disasters is a great reason to have a party right then and there. Shiva the Hindu god destroys existance and she isn't considered evil either.

Note: I put "Evil" in quotations because frankly... many gods of "Death" weren't evil such as Anubus... Some were evil for reasons unrelated to their domain such as Hades... Heck one god of death is the opposite of evil being Buldur... so MAYBE Toady thought of this... though probably he hasn't gotten around to having the temple of murder start to steal babies in the night and sacrifice them...

So I guess my suggestion to add to yours is that when Toady adds allignments to religions (or rather practices) that he doesn't just lump all the evil practices and dark temples to Death, Disease, Murder, or Disaster gods... since they could in fact be virtuous and bright.

This has kinda inspired me to look up the Aztec and Mayan gods.

"When you wake up in the morning, consider suicide."

"This servant of murder greets you."

Doesn't sound very 'good' does it?  :P

Of course, of course, but murder and suicide aren't exactly things you don't want to happen. They're things that are either promoted or discouraged (criminal).

And I understand your point there. Hell, Osiris, God of the flood, life and the nile in ancient Egypt, was also the shepherd of the dead. Anubis took them, but Osiris looked after them once they reached his realm, and helped their spirits get there safely.
