Instant Resizing of Rooms
« on: July 12, 2008, 07:25:21 pm »

Like the title says, I think instant resizing should be implemented. Along with - and + to make the room bigger or smaller, / and * should be usable to instantly make the room as big, or as small, as possible.

Hope that made sense.

I thought I made it clear, but I guess I didn't. And as far as I know, it hasn't been implemented, suggested, maybe, but not implemented.

Let's say you have a table, you press [q] over it, then hit [r] to resize it, or make a new room. Then you use the + or - key to set the boundaries.

Depending on the size, it can take a while, longer if your computer is slow. (Like mine.)

Get it?

This looks like it would be simple to implement and rather useful. Thirded. Or something to that effect.

It chooses a medium size by default IIRC.

Automating this designation process IMO would be more of a hassle than a boon, imagine having to unassign a room everytime you place a bed in a barracks or hospital.

I suggest adding a room-workshop-type that requires a bed to be built, default sizes might be
serf: 2x2,
citizen: 3x3 (+cabinet) and
opulent: 5x5 (with cabinet and chest)
custom rooms created throught the standard furniture interface.

Err, what? I still don't think everybody's grasping the concept. When you resize a 'room' after selecting the appropriate piece of furniature (IE, a bed, for a bedroom, table for dining room, chair for study, etc.) and the little room sizing selector pops up that lets you expand and contract the room size as you see fit with the - and + keys, this fellow is suggesting that you be able to  hit / and * to 'snap,' instantly, to the lowest and largest size rooms, respectively. Or is it the other way around? No matter. In any case, it isn't automatic or anything of the sort. Just a quick way to put a lot of rooms right next to one another without walls (smallest, /) and to fill a swath of large rooms which would require you to hit the + key about 7 times apiece (largest, *)

Or digging out some more walls behind the epic dining room, and having to hit the keys a dozen times. AGAIN.

What happens if the maximum room size is huge, though?  I suppose since rooms currently have to be inside, this prevents the problem from happening unless the player has dug out a huge area, or doesn't have any external doors.  It couldn't occur outside where there are few natural walls.  But it could happen (or some rooms could be designated outdoors in the future), and we wouldn't want to kill their computer or anything in such a situation.  (It probably wouldn't be a problem even under such circumstances, but I'm paranoid.)

Well, just make / and * move in ten increments at a time, as opposed to - and +'s single increment. Problem solved.
