Any trick for keeping a mayor?
« on: July 12, 2008, 02:52:01 am »

Seems my mayors are the first dwarves to die in every (peacfeul) fortress. I haven't been able to keep the dwarf i designate in the embarkation screen as my leader (by giving him leader-skills) for more than a few years.

Their downfall usually begins with a "no one to punish for recent failure"-thought which always takes them from "ecstatic" down to throwing a tantrum and from there it's only a short way to death.

So first question: Is there a way to avoid this kind of thought?

I ask this because i always choose my first mayor because of the things he likes, so i will always be able to meet his mandates.

Second question: If not, is there a way to designate a new dwarf as my constant mayor?

After a mayors death another dwarf is sure to take his place after some time. But these mayors tend to change every year which leaves me with dwarves with differing mandates and i always have to reasign the mayor's office, bedroom and dining-room.

Well, when he issues a mandate, you should get to it right away. I have never failed a fulfillable mandate. You shouldn't get any unfulfillable ones if you choose the mayor as you say you do. Just make sure to always have a wide variety of raw materials available. Especially shells and silk.

Pre-empt his demands as well. If he likes silver, for instance, order some from each caravan. Keep stuff he demands in stock and you should do well with fulfilling mandates.

Maybe my text was a bit confusing, but i never had any problems to meet the mandates of my chosen mayors. The "no one to punish for recent failure"-thought appears every few years or so and i don't know what causes it, since i never let a mandate expire.

There's no way to "pre-select" someone as Mayor.

Unless you mean you'd like to improve the odds that a good Mayor is re-elected each year?

As far as I can tell, the Mayor is elected based on popularity; how many friends he has, how much socialising he does.  Mine always seem to be elected from my military (which can be a real pain  >:( ) as they're mostly stood down so they'll spar...  and when they're not sparring they're chatting.  This means they're more social than my other dwarves, who are kept busy working.

So...  perhaps relieve your wannabe Mayor of any duties?  Except, maybe, a few "lightweight" ones like Architecture that won't take up all their time?

That'd give him/her lotsa time to go around canvassing the electorate, sucking up at parties and kissing babies.

Dunno if it'd work, but it may be worth a try...

Hmm, I'm not sure why you would get a "no one to punish for recent failure" thought then.
I take it his other needs (room, office, etc) have been met?

Do you have any export mandates? If the traders leave the map with items which are currently mandated for no-export, it's considered as a crime but there's noone to punish because the traders have left with their own items. I think it's a bug which will be fixed someday.

For now the best solution to it is to make some expensive trade goods (not of mandated materials :)) and buy all the mandated material items from caravan.
This is the best solution because the "no one to punish" thoughts stack because of EACH exported item which leads to insane happiness drop.

Try this. I hope it helps.

P.S. I'm not sure about decoration, i.e. if you have non-export for rubies and there's a palm scepeter with ruby rings I think it still counts as forbidden export. so there're 2 solutions:
1) Check every item with decorations too.
2) Temporary dismantle trading depot to avoid traders if you don't need to trade and don't want to mess with the things.

Now thats a real politician.  His campaign slogan must've been a real hit.  Kib onulreg is on target for Mayor.  Reporting for duty in 1057.  Or else he was just running against that real prick of a Brewer with a minimum of 4 grudges.

Yeah, one of my top marksdwarves became mayor too. He's lasting longer than the brewer he ran against a couple years ago. His mandates aren't insane so far.

i always get pesants.  my highly socially skilled starting dwarf inevtably gets replaced by some no-tallent pesant hauler with nothing to do with his time but stand around socializing.

I guess I need to tell the little gits to move more rock piles or something.

I usually give every dwarf a bedroom, then don't make any meeting areas or anything. Everyone sits in his or her room all day and they never chat so they never get new friends, so the only risk to my mayor is the military. I haven't really figured out what to do about that yet, though.

Side note, it's always funny to check the relationships screen and see immigrants who have been in the fortress for a decade that are only passing acquaintance with a dozen dwarves and have not even formally met any of the other 50.

I went a tep further on BurnedToast's strategy in my current fortress.  I build bedrooms but do not make them a defined room.  This means any dwarf will use any of the rooms, and when they finish thier work someplace they have no room to run to.  I also have no meeting zone defined so the dwarves don't run to another spot to socialize.

One of the extra benefits of this is that my animals tend to wander the full space of the map at a leisuely pace.  Even with 250 animals my FPS is not taking a major hit.  I added [trAINABLE] to all the creatures in the common domestic, but I don't actually train them.  The presence of that tag makes them more agressive. Horses and donkeys do a great job killing nearly everything that wanders into my map.

What does all that do for you? Well the starting 7 dwarves are always setup as friends.  Since the other dwarves can't chat much they won't form relations.  Your military will complete a spar and then stand in the barracks, they may socialise, but it would generally just be with those that they spar with.
