So dwarves in fortress mode don't have access to the Throwing skill. And there is no sling (not sling-shot, silly) weapon. So heres an idea: Make a Sling weapon type which works as a Throwing aid, allowing you to hurl small items (unless it's a giant sling or something) further, harder and possibly more accurately than you could by hand.

There would be no specialized Sling ammo, any item which can fit in the sling would do. It would use Throwing skill. Since it would be an extension of the throwing skill, there shouldn't be any Goblin Slingers of Human Slingmasters in fortresses or sites. Larger items would have to be thrown without the bonuses from the sling.

In fortress mode, you could make slings out of leather and equip your warriors with them as a secondary weapon, allowing them to pick up and throw small rocks, dirt and any random small items in the same tile as them at enemies. This would train them in the Throwing skill, so you would have to watch out for them tantruming. Possibly this could mean that they could throw items in battle without a sling equipped as long as they had some throwing skill. Maybe even allow dwarves with slings equipped to train Throwing skill at archery ranges.

Imagine your dwarves defeating a goblin invasion by pelting them with rocks and live worms.

Slings are cool and should go in.  Not sure about using the Throwing skill, though.  Maybe a separate Slinger skill, plus using the planned skill synergy stuff to give a bonus based on Throwing?

Also, I think there should be special ammo, as historically precedented.  When possible, slingers used specially shaped bullets rather than any old smooth rock.  In DF, masons could make rock shot, and weaponsmiths could make metal shot.  The kiln could also be used to make clay shot, but that should probably wait for the introduction of pottery.

Also, slings can be made out of plant fiber as well as leather, so the full range of cloth/leather should probably be allowed.
