This idea is actually planned out in the "Beyond version 1" arcs.  I'm pretty sure there's something about getting a bandit camp together and raiding the caverns.  I wish it would be considered sooner, though - it's got all sorts of potential.

Well, there's already an option in the upcoming army arc (not the nearest release though) to control your military dwarves directly. What is it if not the adventurer mode + dwarf fortress mode?

If you look at this from the distance you'll see that the Toady has the brain which has size of an undead elephant and he already has everything in his future plans, like combining two modes together. Duh, guys, he knew this when he just started a "small dwarven sim" in 2002 and put the adventurer mod in...
And you say that a man can't understand the 11-dimensional world. Toady not only understands it, he lives in it and throws his garbage in the 12th dimension.

If he had EVERYTHING in his future plans, why would he have/check the suggestions board? ;)

A step towards the adventurer's fortress would be to pay some carpenter (or the mayor) of a random town to build you a hideout/cabin/small tower/tavern/etc in a desired spot.

You'd have to plant a marker flag on the desired location BEFORE you buy the building (the other way around would be odd, unless you get a 'chart' and a 'homing grackle' from him/her)
buy furniture, lug it around and place them.

If you actually take a look at the suggestions that aren't something Toady thought up, you'll notice that many of them either add detail to, add control to, or sometimes simplify the process of, things Toady already thought of.

Well don't forget that Toady never, to my knowledge, says what ideas he actually takes from the suggestion board. So only he knows how many of those ideas can be attributed to the community at large.

If he does I appologise.

Take a loot at the list of Bloats, and to some extent the list of Reqs (which I think doubles as REQired and REQuested).

I imagine giving adventurers the fortress skills would mean the quest types available in adv mode would multiply. Townsfolk would be able to request that you go mine out a certain type of ore from the west and bring it back, some might ask you to make a table (and four chairs, no doubt!), while others might actually ask you to go and found a new settlement...! It introduces a whole new range of quests that would vary depending on your skill (making doors and installing them, paving a road through town, engraving the palace, creating suits of armor or a new sword for the king, trapping animals and large beasts or taming/training them, etc etc).

Quest: I need 3 nickel bars. The ore for these bars can be found in Tongueclencher.

Rimerider the Ice Dragon is in Tongueclencher.

I'm offering a -large rat bone idol- as a reward.

*Goes to next town over. Buys a nickel chair.
Mines out some diorite from a cliff face. Builds a diorite smelter. Melts the nickel chair into nickel bars.*

I think that you should be able to choose your avatar, in the military, and take control of him whenever you want. you could choose your avatar right away or wait for migrants and do so then. it would be awesome to take control of a military man because, lets face it, do you really want to stand there cranking out a chair or similar whilst you, the guy/gal behind the keyboard, watched yourself blinking in a building. blink blink blink chair! hooray! I'm going to go commit suicide because to get this fortress running i need to do that roughly 80 more times! weeeeee arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh *splash*....
so anyway taking control of the military instead of controlling a worker would be awesome!

oh and i support that create your own adventure cavern idea as well

Who said anything bout controlling a worker? You're an adventurer! When you get bored you can go out and bash some goblin heads in with the *Diorite Chair* you just made.  ;)
