Some silk-related modding
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:20:46 pm »

1) Can I make cave spiders purchasable on the embark screen? Will they produce silk in game? Will they only produce silk at the starting area?

2) Can I mod regular critters (not vermin) to produce silk? Like cave spiders, where they just drop silk at intervals.
Make the kittens actually useful. Or just have my dwarves themselves do it (Ew  :P).

Make the spiders a [COMMON_DOMESTIC]. I think it would be better if you added in a nearly identical common domestic spider with no other biome or alignment tags for this purpose, for no particular reason. Adding the [WEBBER] tag to a large creature only makes it shoot web in combat (and possibly make big webs when found in the wild but not as a cave monster), so any 'random web droppers' would have to be vermin sized.

Hmm...  If you cave cats [WEBBER], would they snare vermin in silk?  That might work.

Actually, vermin hunting is a hard-coded activity.  Cats aren't really fighting vermin, since vermin aren't really creatures.  That said, they would squirt webs at kobolds and such.  If you stick WEBBER on hoary marmots or groundhogs or something and hunt them, that'd get you some webs.  And sticky hunters.

Ah yes...  A beautiful dress made only from the finest groundhog silk.

Don't forget the [WEBIMMUNE] tag, otherwise you'd have some petty embarrassing self webbing incidents.

Another silk question, is it possible to change the default color or is it always white?
