Is he sparring? i can't tell... whoa! no no still can't...
« on: July 08, 2008, 02:00:59 am »

My two recruits stand next to each other in the barracks, off duty and with no weapons to promote wrestling. the job screen tells me they are soldiers but as to whether they are sparring remains to be seen. help anyone?

It should say "sparring in barracks" on job screen, not just "soldier".

"Soldier" is basically just a different name for "no job", except only military dwarves get to use it.  When they start training, the job will change to "sparring".

Just have a few off-duty soldiers hanging around the barracks.  Not much you can do to force them into it.

If they're set up to sleep in the barracks rather than their rooms, they'll spend a little more time hanging around the barracks when off duty.  That will increase sparring chances slightly.

Also do they have no nervous wounds?

Your barracks may be too small?

quite possibly. it is about 6*7. i have no idea if this is big enough. it has 4 beds and i have designated all of them as barracks es and they all take up the same area.

This is unlikely to be the cause of your problem, but only ever designate a room once. What you have done by designating a barracks from each and every piece of furniture in that room is made multiple barracks - and reduced the value of each due to them "sharing" the room with another room. For barracks this isn't too bad - value isn't so important for that room. For things like the dining room though, this is terrible. You will need 4 times as many engravings, 4 times as many statues etc to get the same room to legendary status if it is being "shared" with itself.

So don't share rooms. :)

thanks for that but does that mean that only one bed will be a barracks bed?

Have you stood the squad down? They only spar when off duty and when you make a dwarf a solider he defaults to on duty.

To change this, open the military screen (m), select the squad, view the squad details (v?) and toggle their duty/off duty selection. (t?)
When they're off duty they should spend some time beating each other up in the barracks if there is room :)

Anything inside the room is considered part of that room. Stick 50 beds in there and the soldiers will use any of them to sleep on.

I had a similar problem.  After adding an weapon stand and designating it as a barracks did they eventually spar.
