Terraniums, their contents and Magma
« on: July 07, 2008, 05:06:53 pm »

If I have, say, a dozen goblins in glass cages. If I throw said glass cages into magma, what will happen? Will the goblin die? Will I lose the cage? Will the Iron gear he has stay? Help is well appreciated

I think you'd lose everything... unless you know how to get the stuff back out before it melts.  Good luck with that cause I dunno where to start.

The cage will melt and funky things will happen, iirc, assuming it doesn't fall out the bottom of the map via magma pipe.

Try it and tell us what happens.

The iron should survive. I'm not sure about everything else, but I think it would be similar to melting a cage with something in it...

Why not throw an iron cage into a magma pond you create? Your dwarves will tale the goblins tales of the horrific "Cage of Fire" and you would have endless entertainment.

Creatures inside a cage do not really exist and are unaffected by the world around them. For example, goblins in wooden cages dropped to the bottom of the ocean do not drown, and if you find some way to get them back, can be uncaged with no harm.

The cage functions as a portal to a storage dimension. Its destruction will not kill the goblin, merely seal it away forever in a state of nonbeing.

So yeah, no gear for you.

That goblin teleport thing would actually be a very useful method for setting off a booze-bomb...Build the cage he's in, surround it with cage traps, open the cage, and he's caught again. Replace the cage traps with booze, and dangle the goblin over the magma...BOOM!

The only thing that's not afraid of a dragon is a marksdwarf.
Or maybe a mechanic, if given enough time to prepare.

You can actually define a pit Zone and have anything that's in a cage transferred to the pit, including hostile entities like goblins. That should allow them to be affected by the environment, including being burnt to a crisp. Note that if anything interrupts the dwarf that's transporting them the creature will be let loose.

I don't know about Goblins, but when I throw my caged kittens into the volcano I get the following announcement: "A stray kitten has died in a cage (16x)"  Or something like that.

Genius factory!

You could use the teleport thing as an elaborate trap.

Stick the caged gobbos in a pit, and the next time an invasion comes, pour magma on them. The burning stuff will teleport to the trap corridor, setting any of those little green bastards who walk over it on fire.
