Strangething's Guides
« on: July 07, 2008, 03:32:42 pm »

I've been busy making wiki pages. Here's my first creation, a guide to building towers without the risk of trapped and starving masons.

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Tower_guide

If there's positive feedback, I might do more of these guides. I have one for well digging and a few for preparing a new fortress.

Well written, easy to understand, no logical errors that I can see. I like that your guide shows some common pitfalls and why you do things a certain way to avoid these pitfalls. :b:

Nice guide, I learned most of this first hand so not much that I pulled from it, but great for people not used to making towers. Though I don't see the fun if you can truthfully put the disclaimer "No dwarves were killed in the making of this tower" on your projected ;).

Maybe something for Dams next?

Useful information and factual.  One thing I personally found helpful in building towers and other constructions was to make bar/block stockpiles where they would be readily accessible to the masons and have them restricted to rock blocks only and pull from a full bar/block stockpile.  This makes designating materials for building easier, makes any walls you build already smooth and ready to be made into fortifications, and using blocks instead of stones means you can pack more into a smaller area via bins and therefore make shorter trips overall.

Thanks everyone.

RyanW: Thanks, I appreciate it.

Joseph Miles: Dams? That's a bit beyond my talents right now. I only just figured out proper irrigation.

It does seem a little against the spirit of DF to do things the safe way. I'm funny that way. I like keeping my dwarves in perpetual ecstasy. It bugs me when they die. (Stupid bugged health care.  >:()

Next guides: building a well, skill training, new fortress, fortifications, prisoner disposal, and irrigation. My incomplete controls guide is already up.

EDIT: Quiller: I didn't want to get into the stone vs block question. Can you dig out fortifications from constructed walls? I know you can't engrave them.

I was considering adding instructions for narrowing a tower, like a pyramid. Weirdly, it's easier to broaden a tower. Maybe I should add a section on fortifications.

Yeah, I can't to them either. Hence why I was asking for a guide ;)

Yes, you can carve fortifications into walls. This is preferable to building fortifications, because you still get he floor tile above it, which you don't by building fortifications.

Awesome :D

I'm not quite at the point in the game where I can keep a mine going long enough to start work on really big projects, but once I do get around to building towers, I'll keep this advice handy.

Well, people have called it a dam when I saw it on here, but I'm not sure how exactly to describe it.

I fear that is going to make making a guide about how to make them rather difficult. :)

I think it would be good to include something about narrowing or widening the tower as you go up.  Since you don't seem to be able to build walls on floors, the only way I can think of to do some of that is to build some extra walls and then remove the bits that are underneath afterwards.

If I remember correctly with fortifications, if you build a wall and then carve fortifications you can build walls on top of it, if you just build fortifications instead of a wall, they can't hold up a wall.

Yep, this is true.

That's a pretty cool thing, Strangething.

I said that about fortifications above.

My problem with dams is draining enough water to build walls or floodgates
