Dwarven Hoover(Urist? Armok?) Dam.
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:06:40 pm »

Well I have this map I just generated, The Planes Of Portent.
On this map is a major river, Painappeared.
This river is, where I measured, twenty-seven squares from side to side.

I want to know if anyone would be able to build a dwarven hoover dam blocking this river, just because it is there and dwarves like to piss off elves.

If you feel like it, a thread could be made in community games or whatever to run the actual competition for the best dam or whatever.  Though I am not sure how many people would really be up to this rediculous of a project.

Is it one of the rivers you can see from the world map?  I wonder if damming it would affect its appearance on the world map.

You can see it in the exported world map, yes.
It's also 7 units up and five to the right from the bottom left in the "World" viewer on the embark screen, the white tilde.
Also if anyone finds a waterfall of this river I want to know where it is, I've been scanning the length for a while now...

EDIT : What I really want is to see a successful damming of a Major River, done on pretty much any map.  Also a waterfall.

I had a giant river like that once, and on the map where I settled there was a minor river feeding into it off a waterfall

It was pretty impressive

The map I generated immediately after the one I posted has a similar river, actually both maps appear to have more than one.
One of them was wider than that.  At least 37 units.

Also I found several 4-6 level waterfalls of minor rivers.

Along with a map that came with 166 hippos, stingrays, alligators, and carp.

Sure.

Not very fancy, but it works - and I was able to complete it in less than a year.

Does it affect the flow of the river in other maps?

Nope. It doesn't even affect the flow of the river on the same map if visited in adventure mode.

As for "how did I do it", well, I simply built a bridge, an aqueduct and some screw pumps and let them all do their thing. :)

With a good mass of Pumps it seems. He pumped the water from the river and diverted it from the mapedge. You can see the pumps at Z-level 15. Theres an aqueduct that brings the water sume tiles up to an Tunnel from whom it gets deverted to the Northeastern edge.

Have you tried reclaiming the site and see if the dam still works?

It sort of works. I mean, just after you reclaim every river tile is filled with 7/7 water, but after some time the western part of the river dries up.
