Wow, glad I kept you alive.

Alright, so a small tale of dwarf heroism.

Awhile back, I had a Giant Bat wipe out all my outside dwarves. The only survivors from the attacks were two engravers, one with red wounds on his limbs (he got better) and one with a broken lower spine, so he won't be doing me any good.

I fiddled with the idea of letting him starve, but ultimately decided to keep him for the happy thought generation he caused when dwarves fed and watered him. I kept him in the forward barracks.

Skip to a later date, and Kobolds have been stealing dead gobbo items. No big deal right? Well, they stole enough to generate a Kobold ambush, and they snuck right through a backdoor i have guarded with traps.
I have 13 dwarves constructing a new building for masonry workshops, and all of the poor buggers are stranded on the roof. I'm cringing because I figure they're all doomed when the engraver with the broken back crawled out of bed, out of the barracks and towards the Kobolds. They begin firing willy-nilly at him, and he turns around crawling the other way. A number of arrows hit him, but he keeps going, rounding corners of buildings leading them on a merry chase. When he finally loses consciousness, a marksdwarf squad intercepts and chases off the kobolds, killing all but one of them.

Total death count?
1 elite marksdwarf, caught an arrow in the brain.

The engraver made it, although he is now a full invalid, with the lower half of his body fully maimed now.

Quite heroic, saving the lives of 13 dwarves!

So we should just cripple our military from now on? Don't even bother with sparring? OK ;D

Put a well in my barracks for wounded dwarves, found out sparring dwarves gravitate towards it like a bug zapper.

3 drownings in 3 game days before I figured out what was going on.

Floor hatch over the well will solve that

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

When I first saw this, I thought it was about dwarven drug abuse. I guess I need my eyes checked... That sounds like a cool idea.. dwarven drugs.. You could grow them, boosting your efficiency. The dangers are ODing, and some dwarves going on a binge...

The way I deal with wells is to have a 3x3 chamber, walled off, in/off of the barracks. The eight squares around the well itself is a furniture stockpile admitting buckets and only buckets, so there's always plenty on-hand. The 3x3 chamber is of course, walled off, with a door. Not enough room inside it to spar, so unless you get a ridiculously unlucky money shot and the dwarf sails through the door and straight into the well, you should be fine.

Also, if at all possible, building stairs in the water should let the dwarves climb back out if they fall in. I've made my statuary garden in a room with (Heated and cold!) swimming pools for just this reason, hoping my dwarves fall in during parties and have a pooly old time getting out.

Pool party!

Contrary to common misconception, hemp (because marijuana is a right *spoon* in the attic to spell) doesn't make people lazy.

Lazy people simply smoke hemp.
