I am with Kagus on D ..
since your metalworker and stoneworker will be out of work real fast if you don't dig down :)

Except Hauling :)

About food and beds ? .. hows the wood situation ? .. are you even able to make beds or barrels ?

Huh... I agree with Kagus, however to do that without supplies, will be difficult. So, get the glass furnaces bellowing! Nothing says safe like green-glass-block walls! Not only can you see through them, but they're resistant to any and all kinds of damage. Unless a creature with the building destroyer tag comes along... Yeah... But even so, glass walls, woohoo! You do have magma right? otherwise... well... deserts classically have no wood, so your smelting OP might be in trouble... Just hole yourselves in. Dig down, fill the stockpiles, then build walls in front of your main entrance. Bammo, nothing gets in or out till you say so.

Final Word ---- D!

I'll go with B.
Have you told us what name you picked yet? I for one can't be bothered to translate Ushilotam Akilzekrim into English.

Ushilotam Akilzekrim comes out in bases as Ice-Nose Point-Snot - Icednoses Pointedsnot I'm sure.  Not my first choice, but I have no idea who gets to vote on naming a town.  I'll take it anyway!

And the Dwarves of Icednoses Pointedsnot are going to have some sore backs for a while...

D- Defence! Have the wood cutter who can't cut wood wrestle with the crossbowdorf. Then build fortifications and let the x-dorf shoot at the zombies. The Wood cutter can train on different members of the team leter...

Final: turn it into a barrack with food so they won't lazy off!

(B wins by one vote!)

5th Hematite

The votes told us to concentrate on food again, so I got right to work and put some farm down.  I also built a still for booze, a kitchen for food, and a carpenter's and mason's workshop because I thought we should have some basic workshops.

I thought we should have some amount of defense so I had the dwarves get to work on a wall of fortifications around the entrance. There's still a door, however. As the stoneworker was building this, a strange sight came about...

A lungfish. In the desert. Even if lungfish don't need water, why the hell would one be in the desert?

The small barricade was finished, however.

I also had a miner start digging some shafts for stone and exploration.

Eventually he came upon some hematite.

I had a target set up for the marksdwarf as well.

O lop! What shall we do next?

A: Moar workshops
B: Moar weapons
C: Moar magma
D: Moar seclusion

C!!! Magma is the heart of any dwarven fortress. And if it becomes overrun with villainy, magma can be the heart, lungs, stomach, skin, and bones of every dwarf IN the fortress as it slowly replaces their every organ.

A.
Also, Lungfishes are from the desert, or at least the Savannah (until sand dunes are in, the two are ONE AND THE SAME in my mind). That's why they developed the lung, to move from one dried up pond to another.
Oh man, lungfishes, oh man.

C- Moar magma equates to a burning magma death trap to keep out those zombie camels. Its also a good way to make use of that hematite.

One question: Are you using Sean Mirrsens mineral mod by any chance?
