#'s on recent development page?
« on: July 05, 2008, 12:26:23 am »

This may be a stupid question.  That's okay.  I ask them from time to time.

On Toady's "Recent Developments" page, entries are formatted:

mm/dd/yyyy: ###. text text text . . .

What is the significance of ###?  It haunts my dreams.

It the Final Countdown! ta-da-daaa-daaa, ta-da-da-da-daaaa

It's more or less the same as last time.

###

That's just a recurrence of the old "urban sprawl" bug, except now it's limited to the dev pages.  It should be fixed by the next update.

AFAIK, Toady has a list of things what he has to do before next release, and that number is giving us something like countdown.

I think it might be sort of like a countdown, but I'm not really sure.

#  06/11/2008: [snip] Pushing the last bug cap into the general stack of things I need to do to finish the release, I've closed off stage 10 and am now looking at the road issues I had put off and finally the stack of notes that I've accumulated. All together, it's a file with 415 lines. More than half of those lines can just be shunted off to dev. It's analogous to the similar countdown prior to the z-axis release [snip]

06/12/2008: I've gone through the list and moved off items I don't have time for. It now has 278 lines. There were some problems from the cliff smoothing change I did earlier that I cleaned up for today in preparation for some road and river fixes.

It's the number of things he has to do before he's going to release.

I thought it was the number of unfixed bugs.

At one point he mentioned he had a number of errata type things that had piled up over the course of this arc which should be sorted before it gets released.  It amounted to about 250 lines of text, and I think that is what the number represents.

T1TG seems to be getting through them at about 10-15 lines a day, so maybe we could see the release in a couple of weeks, max. Yay.

Oh nuts, just realised I'll be on holiday. Dang.

Woot, down to 88 now.

And now enemies make trinkets out of the bones and skin of their slain enemies! Once we get Skills in adventurer mode, we can make armour out of the skin of the slain Minotaurs that we kill. And melt down the Bronze Colossus into a sword.

I think it's the number of unfixed bugs too.
So called "bug cap" Toady mentioned earlier.

Or maybe it's the number of "things to do" which is close.

I think it's the lines of text in his error log. I think he treats each line as a seperate bug, and the number of lines is the current bug count, i.e. the numbers next to the dev notes.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I thought Toady was going to release the next version of Dwarf Fortress on the 23rd or when he finishes these lines... whatever one is later

He will work on DF until the 23rd or 'til the release is done, whichever is later.

Then to serious business:

Toady's average speed of knocking down lines from the things to do list is approximately 14.36 lines/day. So with this rate we will have the new version in 5.36 days, which is 6 days in reality.

So math proves that it will be DF until 23rd because the next version is coming within a week.  ;D
