A game that allows you to roleplay?

Games that support actual roleplaying are few and far between - the traditional RPG is definitely not one of them.

RPG stands for "rapid point gain", as in "You killed the orc! You got 324 experience points!  You gain a level and get 2 strength, 4 agility, 5 hit points and 2 magic points!"

I think that an RPG in video gaming terms is any game where you can play the same area repeatedly to powerlevel your character.  The only games I can think of that DON'T fall under that description, are things like System Shock 2 where you get limited XP (but still get it as the game progresses).

They're kind of like some bizarre exercise simulator.

It's not 'playing a role' that makes an RPG  It's 'Role-playing', hence the name Role-playing Game. ARPGs aren't technically roleplaying games, neither are JRPGs.  Neither are most CRPGs in general.

You don't role-play Mario, you make him run around and jump.

*eye twitch*

Edit: We should organize some sort of Bay 12 Wesnoth battle. It's a simple game to pick up and play, will probably run on most of our computers, and it's free. Can't get much better than that. Unless it also makes you lunch or something.

Lemme put it this way.  You know what an ant is right?  You know what a lion is right?  What's an Antlion?

I guess I should try this game now that I've posted so much in it's thread. :D

Ioric, never ever ever explain yourself again.  Let someone more qualified do it.

The act of roleplaying is defining a character, and then interacting with the environment as your character would.  Playing a role is being forcefully put into the position of a predefined character and having that character interact the world as it would.  Most games will put you into a role, if only because it is so much easier to set up since you don't have to prepare for a massive spectrum of possible characters.  You only need to set up the "track" for one character, and then have that character ride along.

The Witcher would be a pretty good example of playing a role.  Your character is predefined, as is his background, his quest, and (within an extent) the way he interacts with the world.  Roleplaying requires a much greater deal of freedom, because you are acting as a different personality, someone who may or may not want to do what the game has intended for it.

Mind you, the line isn't particularly well-defined.  Most games will have something in the middle ground between total character freedom and zero character freedom.

I've tried it multiple times, I will again. I just cannot get the hang of turn based strategies, I get beaten to a pulp every time. Same with the Dominions games, unless I have all odds with me, I am quickly cornered and my concentrated hordes are slaughtered slowly and painfully...any tips would be appreciated, I suppose. My main problem is spreading out; I have this habit of stuffing all my forces into one area and then I get surrounded.

Thank you, fellow unenlightened.  You have made me feel much better, seeing as you are proof that I am not the only one who suffers the exact same fate in TBS games.

Heh, you know...  Checkers is a turn-based strategy game.

I barely made it far at all into the campaign. I'm downright terrible. The only battle I ever did well on was a user's custom undead versus undead fight. I try to imitate the AI to some extent, they seem to know what they're doing...

I'd argue it isn't a game.  Just like Tic-Tac-Toe isn't a game.  They've both been solved.

Yeah, well, Age of Wonders is a game, and yet it's been solved too.

Aye. Then arguably even NetHack isn't a game. I believe a few folks came up with a way to be effectively invulnerable and never die over an infinite period of time. With a bit of effort... anything can be a game. Even the composition of music, or the creation of art.

I suppose it's subjective, however.

To be fair, I also argue that dwarf fortress isn't a game.

It's a toy, and quite a good one.
