The Battle For Wesnoth.
« on: July 03, 2008, 07:07:41 pm »

http://www.wesnoth.org/

It could easily be described in seven(nine) words: Epic, turn based RPG. It's also Open-Source.

But then again, most people who are avid freeware searchers already know of it. I just wanted to make a topic so the discussion could be in one spot.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

You might want to check your math...

In any case, I remember playing Wesnoth for a bit a long time ago.  At first, I wasn't too sure I lked it...  Then I grew to think it was amazing...  Then I played it to the extent of the rather simple gameplay, and got tired of it.

Well I counted Open-Source as one word. I can never remember what my english teacher said about hyphenated words counting as two or one.

More of a Strategy-RPG, I would say.

I was pointing out a numerical typo in Torak's post...  Those are not my words.

So having levels and a storyline where you are playing as a person does not make it an RPG? Then what is an RPG?

Panzer General had a story. You were this Field Marshall of Wermacht, who was bent on taking over the world and would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those pesky russkies. so they're both RPGs. maybe. But also definitely wargames. 8)

anyway noone knows what roleplaying games are. Technically almost any game allows you to play a role (be it a role of a monkey fixing pipes, or a plumber killing mushrooms), and is thus an RPG. some people define RPG as having the ability to make character defining choices , but that excludes most "action RPGs", and includes a load of strategies and adventure games...
