I learned the exciting effects of sleep deprivation. And some stuff about rocks and the history of smelting.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

I learned that not all forum communities are full of crap and that fluffy wamblers exist.

I learned everything I believe in. No exaggeration, no kidding, just most of it indirectly because of contacts from this community.

I keep getting shocked by that one.  Both in good ways here, and bad ways elsewhere.

I've been inspired to learn a lot more about minerals and overall geology, often by hitting a stone layer and wondering what the heck that cursed microcline really is, for example.

Now geology piques my interest almost as much as chemistry, and I do love my chemistry.

that a few crowns, four scepters, five amulets, six earrings, four rings, an idol, eight bracelets and a large yellow jasper is a great haul for a hoarding dragon.

I've learned an insane amount about rocks and rock layers. Rather nifty.

It taught me mathmatical principals through Birkhov's Boltage Lore. That states that the more powerful an adventurer is the more likely he is to die from an arrow/bolt.

I am studying to become a translator, and some basic interpreting stuff comes with the package. Consecutive interpreting is done by listening to the speaker, taking short notes and reproducing the speech from said notes in the other language. I suddenly find myself incorporating, for instance, the DF quality designations into my notes. "It is of utmost importance to..." becomes "≡IMP≡" , "It is rather important to..." becomes "-IMP-" and so on and so forth.
...
oh, and all the geology in DF meant I didn't have to prepare for my last exam... which was about mineral resources.

I've learnt that when you see a carp - you run. Really really fast.

The people give me strange looks - but they'll know! They'll be laughing on the other side of their faces when they're pulled into a river and devoured! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Sorry.

I think I have finally figured out the title question (I am taking this topic far to seriously I think.):

That despite injustice and evils in the world, when corporations war over minds and governments over resources, were entertainment is mas produced by companies blind for all but profit... One person, whit talent, determination, and a dream, can make by himself something far, far better on all planes than all those companies together whit millions of dollars and thousands of employees ever could come close to.
That in a world ruled by greed one can using the tools forged by that very evil, internet and computers in this case (I am not claiming they are evil, I am claiming they are created and maintained by morally questionable companies, and I use the term evil in a metaphorical, or more likely dramatical, sense), can create something wonderful and beautiful and awesome, and ignoring all "reasonable" claims how he could get rich and powerfully, he follows his dream and gives it for free to everyone who wants it, giving up his own sustainance. And yet he remains, because altruism is rewarded against all sense, because in the millions and billions of mindless corporate and governmental zombies there are a few, maybe one in a million, that can too seem this dream and gives up a slight bit of their own comfort in order for it to continue.
Dwarf Fortress have taught me what fairytales and stories of all time has in vain tried to teach me when my cynicism would make me not listen: That however dark the times, the world, there is always a slight ray of hope, that there is something good, and that whit enough determination that good can illuminate, not everything, not even a great part of anything, but at lest those very few not yet corrupted. That in the stormiest sea of evil one may still find an island if one just looks hard enough, and have a bit of luck.

My tear glands must be broken, because nobody can write something like that and not cry, and I just did.

DF taught me that the reason I couldn't find a game I wasn't bored of wasn't my fault. I just hadn't found it yet.

The basics of ores and metals were cool to learn. The process to make steel, and the names and properties of stones and minerals. The strange fact that several gems and rock types sound like refreshing beverages...

The fact that any civilization can make peace with all of its neighbors by trading adorable kittens by the cage load, to say nothing of the vast profit involved.
