What has dwarf fortress taught us?
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:39:00 pm »

Be honest, folks. how many of you have discovered something in dwarf fortress only to immediately crack a dictionary or go online to find out exactly what it is. Now how many of you have done this more than once?

I know I have. And I've learned things. Maybe not all of them immediately useful to me, but I generally consider any increase in knowledge a good thing.

My uncle recently got a malachite crystal ball. I would not have previously known there was mineral called malachite if it weren't for Dwarf Fortress. I also seem to remember looking up what a braise was.

So, without too much sarcasm, what real-life knowledge has dwarf fortress taught you, or caused you to look up?

Always make sure that small people have enough beer to keep them from beating each other (or more importantly, you) up.

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

Knowing what pitchblende was (not from DF itself, but from one of the Future of the Fortress threads), and then when it just happened to come up in a pub quiz a few weeks back I was instantly fire out the answer.

We still lost.

I learned Kittens are a viable food source due to their high reproduction rate.

I learned about and watched the movie Labyrinth. I also learned that irrigation ditches made of ice are poor ways to conduct magma; especially into large pool chambers made of ice right beside your main hall.

I learnt that stupidity and sentience are seemingly the same thing. Idiocy bridges the species barrier.

I learned that there are more types of opals than every other type of gem combined... Or toad just has a thing for opals left out most of the other gem sub types.

1. Watch out for Turkeys
2. If you have a problem, complain directly to the mayor and rip his/her lungs out.
3.Why were doing bad in Iraq-we need to provide booze breaks for our soldiers or they will keep on taking breaks.
4.President Bush could have me hammered anytime he wants.

Geography. I broke out my old geography book (which I hated with a passion back then) from cold storage so that I could learn about volcanoes, plate tectonics, stone types, ores etc - solely to find out where I should dig for iron.  :)

Then I met a girl two weeks later who is studying to be a geologist at the university. She was most impressed by my perceived vast knowledge and that netted me a couple of good hours  ;) go DF!

But really, after playing I started to research game-creation in Python. You know what resources I found for making tiles? None. I learned that it's freaking hard to learn above-basic programming over the interwebs.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
