Where is it?

Are you kidding me? It's like the most basic thing to know about Windows XP... O_o

However, from what I can tell, that is (while supermegafast to me) unusally slow. Any tips?

In the end, it is all about how fast and how many ram your computer have plus how big is your current fortress. If it already tripled your normal speed, I think it's about the best you'll be able to get out of your machine.

On a side note... I think 100 FPS is a tad too fast for me now that I got used to 60fps. I think I'll cap the game FPS to 60.  :p
Also, I'm wondering if it's not easier on the game to calculate everything when the FPS is low... I did exactly the same thing than usual when I just started a new game, but it's the first time ever that I have a miner drown when reaching the river...

I don't know what "the configuration menu of windows" is because I'm really really horrible with connecting names with things, but I'm sure know the menu you are talking about. I just don't know what you are talking about.

Are you sure? I'm told that worse machines than mine run it at 70fps+

Mabye it is because my computer was built with 256MB RAM and was later upgraded?

Do you have a graphic card? And if yes, what is the ram of said graphic card?

Mine is 128 ram.

Edit: Also, do you use a Celeron?    :p

Also, my "normal" speed was 23-25 FPS on my 8 years old fort before I applied the Vsync fix...

Well, I can understand that it is a language problem. Here's a picture of the menu I was refering to, just in case:

Please note that on this picture the name is in French, so I have no idea what the exact right name in English is.

I'm going to assume yes, I don't know, and no idea. Tell me how to find out.

That's where I've found mine:

As for your general computer information, look at my last post picture and click on the "system" icon. First thing you'll see should be a sumary of your system.

Your configuration menu is my control panel.

That's the second place I looked, after the device manager.

Do you see on my own control pannel an icon named "NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager"? I have that special icon because it came with my graphic card.

If you don't have such a special icon installed, and you don't see any special graphic option(s) in the menu you bring from your desktop with a right-click and then selecting properties... Then I think it's safe to assume that you don't have a graphic card at all.

I have that.

Two things: I know a fairly large amount about using a computer, and in most areas am plenty proficient. However, until you helped me with this problem, I had zero experience with this, and had a computer that frustratingly didn't have the correct options for this.

Also, it turns out my 35fps measurement was during one of the few very rare times the game slows down a lot due to many calculations. It normally runs at over 150fps, about fourteen times what it used to.

Looks like I'm wrong about the FPS again.

It now bounces between 35 and 180 FPS, usually hanging around 80 or 90.

A bit speedy, but I can always pause the thing.

(I never, ever, would have expected pausing because the game was running too fast. But that's what you get at 12fps.)

Well, I know that flooding/magma always drop my FPS big time when I open a floodgate to flood/magma some space.

And I do pause the game all the time.  ;)

If you permanently flood an area (but not permaflood) does that slow down the game once complete?

Nope. As far as I am concerned, only the "wave" calculation slow the speed down. I didn't noticed a significant change of speed when using an outside moat once it been flooded, for example.

Toady has said that the main slowdown during water/magma flow comes from updating the connectivity map, but once the water stops flowing it doesn't have to do that, so it speeds up again. Flows work differently in the new version, though, so it won't slow down as much.  :)

Fairly constant 230FPS.
