Your (least-)favourite word?
« on: June 30, 2008, 12:59:48 pm »

Have you ever had a strange obsession with a word? A word that just topped all others, one that flashes everytime it appears, as if it was begging you to read it?
No?
Good, you've passed the first question.

Second question, though, what word do you absolutely love to use? And what word do you don't like? As in, throw-it-in-with-a-bunch-of-carps-and-let-it-burn-in-hell-don't-like like?

My favourite one is, by far, the word apparently. It's vague, but surprisingly comprehensively. And don't even start me about the mess it makes in people's heads ( shouldn't the second a be an e? or the first e an a? AAARGH! )
My least-favourite word is clearly. Don't ask me why.
PS: I'm not a word perv, I'm doing some sort of a research around words. Everything in the name of science ^^.

Noggin, it pisses me off when I hear it, and I can't figure out why.

I like "evidently." It has a ponderous sound to it that I like. "There were a plague of monkeys under that nunchaku?" "Evidently."

My least favorite "word" would have to be "whatever." It's by far the most boring, unimaginative and depressing reply a person can possibly use, like a blank space that could have been filled with any number of more interesting replies.

I like those dozen-or-so-letter-long words on the backs of soap and shampoo bottles. I enjoy trying to sound them out aloud, often cracking myself up.

I agree that 'whatever' is bad one, but I really hate the words 'technically' and 'literally' and how they are all too often switched and confused.

I think it's not a specific word, but whenever people use PR-modified phrases to improve their position. Examples:

global warming vs. climate change
freedom fighter vs. rebel vs. insurgent
bribe vs. campaign contribution
slave vs. indentured servant

I think we need to just tell it like it is, and if you sugar coat life people are less able to make their own informed decisions. Words are powerful, and simply changing the word everyone uses to describe something may be the single killing stroke in a social movement. But I'd rather have social change be more difficult, even if it's a change I agree with, because changes I don't agree with would also be more difficult to shove down our throats.

When I first heard the word climate change frequently used in place of global warming, I nearly cried. Anything at all that deviates from the average climate of an area is now an excuse for them to go and whine about us killing the planet.

I like 'discombobulated', but I'm almost positive it isn't a real word.

My least favorite word is landau. Its the strangest, most obscure word I've ever heard and its spelling makes no sense. And it made me lose a spelling bee. Damn you, landau.

No thread has been devised that's large enough to hold all the words I like.

But if I could narrow it down to just one favourite?

"Damn", "Dagnabit", "Damnations" and variation upon.

Ooh, tricky...  I like words, so it's hard to narrow it down to just one most-favorite and one least-favorite.  Bu lemme try...

Most:  Bugger.  It's just so much fun.

Least:  Hmm...  Tricky one....   I'll say "cooperate".  Pronouncing it has always made me think of toilet paper.  I have no idea why.

My "real" least favorite would be the acronym "lol".  I feel that counts because it is being used as a word rather than an acronym.

My favourite word, HAS to be "Bawbag," just because of how it rolls out for me, but it has a social stigma attached to it.

Least, has to be "Perthshire."

'nuff said.

I like words. It's tough for me to pick a favorite but since I need to contribute to this thread I'm going to choose "defenestration." It's a long complicated way of describing something swift and nasty; being thrown through/out a window.

The runner up would be "deglubbing." Essentially this is where a really high speed wind tears off a persons skin. Where in the world did this happen often enough that we needed a word for it, and should I change my vacation plans?

Least favorite? I'd have to get back to you.

I have a strange habit of saying certian words as much as i can, right now those words are "Legit" (as in Legitimatley.) And Potatoes. Potatoes is an awesome silence breaker.

My least favorite sentence as it is is "Not Too Much". I hate it when people answer "whats going on" with "not too much"
Plenty of shit is going on and you know it. Spill motherfucker.

I just hate the excessive use of lol in a sentence.
I mean, come on, some of these people are in the same English class as me, and yet I am unable to read their texts or online messages.
Then they complain about my spelling and grammar.
It is either posh or stupid.
I hate it when people say that word from the mary Poppins film.
I HATE IT.
HATE.

40% word, 60% usage:
Rich white kids using the Unmentionable N-Word with each other.  And are dead serious.

But now for some optimism!  I really, really, like the word scintillate.
