abbreviation
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:19:14 am »

Uhmmm..
I am wondering already since I joined the forum..

What does 'lol' stand for?

I assume it is 'laughing out loud' from context it is mostly used in.
I used it myself once or twice, in that assumption.

But sometimes people seem to use it when they're not amused.
So I really want to know what it stands for. And I hope I didn't insult anybody when using 'lol', if it has another meaning.

I've been on this forum for quite some time. But before that, I never looked at forums.
And, during the forum move, I chatted over IRC for the first time in my life.

So excuse me for being a bit of a 4um-tlk-n00b. ;D
(That's probably why I'm liking this forum so much, almost no abbreviations / webtalk)

Right then.
Lol is indeed a general way of expressing mild amusement, although it is sometimes used to mock someone who is unable to type in english and uses AOL speak.

It indeed means "laugh(ing) out loud".

Other internet abbreviations (that express amusement) you might've heard of are:

lmao - laughing my ass off
rofl   - rolling on the floor laughing

Thanks.
Funny thing is, in Dutch, the word 'lol' means 'fun' :)

Heh, I'm Dutch too and though it's coincidentally applicable in the same situations, it means something different.

Forgive me my offtopicness, but where do you live?

AOL is an American internet provider, I think, and there's something to do with a chat service being populated by babbling children unable to spell the simplest of words.
Or something.

AOL is an American internet provider, and one of the big instant messaging services is AIM (AOL Instant Messenger).  AIM is populated by a lot of high school and college students who type in the typical webtalk shorthand, hence why a lot of people tend to poke fun at them.   :)

AOL stands for American OnLine.

Since we are asking, I keep seeing something like, (sp?) around.  What does that mean!?

(sp?) means "Spelling?" You add it to words which you think you may have spelled incorrectly.
