Quantum stockpiles, as noted in previous threads, are handled with the most efficiency when using complex engineering methods. The current options are flows and bridges, if I remember right. Bridges require more micro and cause less  lag, but water gets it done faster and more efficiently, if engineered correctly.

Wouldn't everything just end up exploding horribly if somehow an object in your pile ended up on fire?

I've heard it said that nothing actually explodes.

I've seen videos that sure looked like something exploding.

I've never heard that anything other than alcohol will explode.  Though coal seam and diamonds will ignite when they are tiles I think I've seen a demonstration of the combustion of other objects of the same material.

Really, though, the answer is this:

Hopefully.

No smoking in the quantum stockpile.

Urist, what are you doing?! URIST NOOO

...

I'll divert some magma onto it soon and let you know what happens when magma touches 50 booze barrels, 80 mined coal, and 100 wood simultaneously.

I don't know if this sounds too obsessive, but I like to create one quantum stockpile for each type of rock, and place it right next to a mason (not all stockpiles need to be in the same room but it helps), that way if I want "obsidian statues" I can just forbid all the other piles.

Personally I just use THIS manual stone selection mod. Makes all stone economic, so you can enable or forbid it's use as if it was, say, iron ore.

This works another way as well. If you have no garbage zone designated and then the select dump for all the goods in a particular stockpile, they will be ignored when calculating for the occupancy of that tile. This means that you can quantum load a stockpile by dumping the stockpile instead of the item you want moved. Since there isn't anywhere for the goods in the pile to go they won't be picked up.
