So it isn't just limited to throwing.
« on: June 24, 2008, 03:09:23 pm »

I've heard quite a lot about the absolute murderous OMGWTFBBQ level of damage you can inflict via throwing various nonsensical articles in adventure mode, so I decided to have a looksee.
Now, it wasn't long after I had slain an ettin with some mud scrounged off the bottom of a murky pool when I had realized that, yes, lobbing stuff was quite deadly, especially at that rate of experience gain.
Putting it aside, I decided to make an elf wrestler and attack the first gobbo tower I saw. So I enter this tower (Named, somewhat creatively, the shaft of light or something to that effect) and proceed to hork the weapons of every guard I come across and see how long it takes for one of them to actually hit me.
Naturally, none of them even NOTICED me, thanks in no small part to my many stealthy ocean expeditions. So, stashing these many heavy objects, I eventually cast my envious eyes on a pair of heavily decorated pants worn by a master lasher and set to horking. When trying to leave, I accidentally walk into him and notice something. I had just bashed him with his pants, and he was now minus the comfort and utility of two ribs and a liver.
"Huh?"
I hit it again. His entire hand is rendered useless. I hit it again. He doesn't have a leg to stand on, so to speak. I hit him one last time. His head is smashed into his body.
Realizing my newfound awesome power, I extirminate the entire fortress with my trusty warpants.
What it looks like from here is that EVERYTHING, regardless of delivery method, exhibits at worst half the damage potential of a dedicated weapon of war. Am I correct in this assumption? Is this old news? Do I need to lern2write? Should this thread be derailed?

No, you simply picked up the Fellpants of Striking, forged in the cold fires of the Glaciers of Death, brewed in hatred, threaded with doom, and then decorated with a very tasteful image of three sweet pods in groundhog leather.

Honestly, it could be that the quality modifier on the pants made you a legendary or better... I don't even know what skill that would use. I'm going to stick with the Fellpants explanation.

I bashed a child's head in with a slice of panda meat, so I would say yes.  Not as impressive as pantsing the leader of a dark tower and beating him to death with his trousers, though.   ;D

It uses the "armor user" skill, oddly enough...  And it is horribly slow to train up.

Honestly, after playing a game that allows you to disembowel people with a pair of pants, it's hard to go back to playing a game that doesn't allow you to disembowel people with a pair of pants.

Well, you are, technically "using" something that some people might consider armor. You're just not using it in a very conventional manner.

You see, it isn't just limited to clothing.  Smashing someone with a pebble will train the armor user skill.  Hitting someone with a fish will train the armor user skill.  Fencing using a beetle will train the armor user skill.

I had a drunk pick up a coat in tatters from a zombie. Then he proceeded to whack the upper body off an other zombie with it.

Drunken style, I tell you!

P.S. No mods, just the ruins that once were.

So many things here I'd be tempted to put in my sig.

Pants doing 50% the damage of an equivalent-quality weapon makes sense, since the listed damage values for weapons not made of appropriate metals/obsidian is 50%.  Testing this from the opposite direction might be interesting.  Has anyone had a strange mood resulting in pants made of steel?  Alternatively, has anyone tried hitting something with an adamantine sock?

i would love a pair of adamantine socks.... menacing with spikes of obsidian and studded with goblin bone decorated with an image of a dwarf surrounded  by socks...

I don't know about socks (do they use adamantine fiber for moods?) but artifact adamantine mug made wonders for me.
My adventurer sent those gobbos flying with it.

I'm not sure how -random object- could do 'half the damage of a weapon', since different weapons do different amounts of damage.  I suppose there's probably just some default value for the damage of a non-weapon object, which is then affected by quality and material.
