Bug or just funny?
« on: June 23, 2008, 09:02:28 pm »

One time I decided to go ape on a hippy elven retreat and had already killed about 15 of
them when I attacked a sleeping elven guard. And he blocked the attack!! Without waking up!!
I'm not sure if everyone can do this or just trippy elf guys, but it was so crazy.

Everyone does this. You can do this. Nothing special.

The other nice thing that relates to this is that creatures sometimes don't wake up even if you break their kneecaps.  ;D But this parrying thing is a bug and is going to be fixed in the next release  :-[

Then to more important news. Welcome to the forums! I noticed this was your first post. Don't get scared because the first answer might have seemed a bit harsh. This thing is just so well known that people aren't so enthusiastic about it anymore, but I think it's still funny. You'll get to know these things here if you hang out longer. Have fun!

You can block stuff while asleep too.

Only by a loose definition of "block" though.
I guess you could have your shield lying atop you and the attacker might hit that.

I had a sleeping goblin parry and kill me, while asleep.

I thought of it more like a goblin sleeping on the ground, at the top of the tower.  A single dwarf creeps up, softly and quietly.  The goblin mutters, "No... get away... Mrfghg...", waving his arms feebly in an attempt to drive away the demons plaguing his dreams.  The dwarf gets next to him, and raises his axe.  Suddenly, the goblin sceams, and swings his hammer.  The dwarf slides several feet, leaving behind a blood stain and his life.  The goblin then mutters, "Mrgl... That taught that... unicorn...", falling back into a deep sleep.

Quote from: Dave Mustaine
No one is safe when I close my eyes; I come to take your life

I get to force your untimely disappearance
Each night in my dreams, when I'm fast asleep
I close my eyes and you just vanish soon as I
Lay down my head when I'm dead to the whole wide world

No one is safe when I close my eyes; I come to take your life

The sleep-blocking makes sense in certain cases, though! Anyone ever read The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett? One hero is so powerful that he blocks an attack made on him before waking up. Of course, the average peasant woman probably doesn't have this level of martial expertise...

Anybody who HASN'T read Terry Pratchett should be forced to read them before continuing to play DF.

Really? I'm just really into the micromanagement.
O.K., they should be forced to read the first two. After the release of the magic arc, they should move onto the witches trilogy and so on.

I always preface the first two with 'the ones you have to read to get to the good stuff'

I'm in the process of reading through all of them... not in any particular order. Haven't read the first three yeat; I came in at Equal Rites.

Every time I read one that contains the various dwarven bars in Ankh-Morpork, I find more parallels between Discworld dwarves (city ones, at least) and DF dwarves...

As someone who's never read a Pratchett novel, can any fan recommend a good place to start?  I got Night Watch recently 'cause the blurb made it sound like something I could get into, but I can't get past four pages.

Any of the first 6 or so are an excellent place to start.

I haven't found any reason to read them in order yet, although it is necessary to read the book quite thoroughly, otherwise it can be difficult to understand what's happening.

The Colour of Magic
The Light Fantastic
Equal Rites
Mort
Sourcery
Wyrd Sisters
Pyramids
Guards! Guards!

Any of these are good starting points. Although I would recommend the first four over the others.

There's also The Discworld Companion; The Streets of Ankh-Morpork; A Tourist Guide to Lancre; and The Discworld Mapp, in case you get lost easily. But you shouldn't need them if you're used to the fantasy genre.

I Loooooved Men at Arms and Small Gods. I didn't even realize they were by the same author until later.
