Respawn liason
« on: June 22, 2008, 08:05:45 am »

Ok, this is rather annoying and i hope this will be fixed. As i stated on other thread i had big beautiful fortress and when liason did leave he got ambushed by goblins and died, now i heard there will be no new liason coming and i have to start all over because this.  Resurrecting my liason via DC is not possible because i can't find his body. So how about make liason respawn automaticly if goblins or other hostiles kill him, i think it would make sense them sending new liason in case of accidental death as long player didn't kill him. Sorry if this have been suggested before, tried search but didn't see anything similar.

It is in the dev notes already.  I can't quite recall whether it made it into the next release, or whether it is among the early items for one of the next few releases.

How would the rulers know it was accidental rather than "accidental"?

Yeah, I sort of like the "you are automatically assumed to be a liason killer" aspect.    Unceremoniously generating a new one out of thin air would be antithetical to the "something has gone terribly terribly wrong!" style of the game we all know and love.

The problem with having a liason die is that there is only one per civilization, so if you kill him in one fort and there is only one dwarf civ in your world, no future fortresses will be able to request specific items.

How would the rulers know it was accidental rather than "accidental"?
You might as well ask the same thing of how we kill the members of the nobility that come to our forts.

Oh, I'm totally fine with a new one being appointed.   Just that an instantaneous reanimation is kinda lame, y'know?

Nobles won't let a little thing like death stand in the way of their outrageous demands.

That's what we're asking for.

I, for one, like the notion of being heldresponsible for what happens to guests to your lands, by your doing, accidents, or goblinoids.

(appointing a new one would still be nice.  Maybe appointing a new one on embark combined with bribing the king to send you a new one?

This has probably been mentioned before, but it would be nice if you could assign a few soldiers to specific dwarves--like the liason--to escort him onto and off of the map.  That way if the liason manages to get himself killed by wild animals, it really is the fault of the fortress/player for providing inadequate protection.

I've got my entrance road to the edge, with a channel as close to the edge as it gets (6 squares?), and a guard tower right on it.  (Not that anyone is ever in the guard tower, mind you...)

I don't have many problems with my traders being ambushed.  (There's only one valid route to the Trade Depot since there's cliff down on left and cliff up on right.  I also dug a 'back door' into the fortress that most of the rest of the area can access.  That way the gobbos tend to spawn away from where the caravans do.)

Maybe once the army, county, duchy, kingdom, etc. arcs are in, the ruling authority will simply send soldiers to investigate. If it was invaders, and they're still around, they'll help you kill them. If it was you, prepare for consequences.

Bribing the king for a new one sounds like a good approach to me. Nothing says "sorry for your loss" like two tons of +crafts+ offered to the next caravan.
