About lags in Adventure Mode
« on: June 21, 2008, 06:58:35 pm »

Hello,

I searched the forum for this topic but i only found one thread about this problem regarding a past version, where people said it would be fixed soon. If this is already a massivley discussed topic please forgive me*.

So my problem is i get massive lags in adventure mode. Sometimes it takes one, two or even three second for my adventurer to move to the next tile. Do you experience the same?
Especially towns and abandoned fortresses are lagging that heavy.

I run the game with WINE under Linux** on a P4 3.4GH(I know it's crap and I don't need an heater during winter but it'll take some time until i earn real money)
I mean 100 dwarves in Fortress mode are moving faster than one single adventurer. What causes this  lag? Is there any way to speed up the game?

I have an additional somewhat related question. While traveling on the World Map (T) I notice a progress bar. What is computed, loaded, stored, whatever during the time it progresses? The weather and...?

Thanks alot.

*also for abusing the english language, if i did. If i did tell it.

**under Windows XP the performance is even worse.

I'm not sure what would do that. The major lag culprit in adventure mode is sightlines, especially in forest. I get lag from time to time (frequently after running in one direction for a long distance), which I blame on caching, but it happens once ever few dozen moves. Other lag can come from hugely overpopulated sites, ongoing battles, and landscape features (i.e., chasms).

Kudos on using linux, and I didn't see anything wrong with your English. Don't worry about it too much; even us native speakers screw it up royally from time to time. ;)

Well, I bought a new, relatively beastly PC a few months ago and I still get occasional lag in Adventure Mode. It's a Q6600 (Quad Core), with 4GB ram and an 8800GT.

CPU usage whilst moving around in AM maxes out a single core for me (25%) leading to delays between keystrokes and actual movement, as well as times where it pauses for a second or two as I move around towns. I'd personally like to see Dual and Quad Core CPU support, though I'm guessing the large amount of CPU usage will be reduced in upcoming versions.

Multithreading for DF would be amazing.

I think that lag in Adventure Mode is caused by LOS (Line Of Sight) calculations.
Units in Fortress Mode don't have LOS so game don't lag (at least not that much) even with lots of units. But in Adventure Mode in area with lots of units, it sometimes takes 2 seconds to move 1 tile, while in empty areas i can move 5 tiles per second without a problem.

I have an additional somewhat related question. While traveling on the World Map (T) I notice a progress bar. What is computed, loaded, stored, whatever during the time it progresses? The weather and...?

I think that even in Travel Mode your adventurer somewhat moves tile by tile as it would normally do, so a path needs to be calculated etc.
Notice that if wolves attack you while you travel, you will stop somewhere between your previous location and your destination, probably in the path between these locations.

PS. I am sorry for my English too ;)

I always thought the place where they attack you is random. And i never met an animal while walking through the wilderness. I only hit them by using 'T'ravel mode.

LOL @ ^^^

Also, you can meet animals whilst wilderness travelling, however it seems to be far less common than when 'T'ravelling.

It's true, when I just run through the wilderness, I never see anything.

Most I've ever seen was a single camel.
