Zefie Fortress: What do you mean, Bismuth!?[Community]
« on: June 19, 2008, 12:53:50 pm »

Zefies are small, intelligent creatures that look like black fuzz balls with glowing yellow eyes. They possess natural speed and are relatively difficult to damage (often times, they will lose non-essential fuzz instead of a lung). They are cheerful and work hard. Anyone up for this?

You walk into the tavern. The zefies there are clearly worried. The assorted tribes have been scattered to the winds. Small towns like your current home sprout up. Then goblins come and burn them to the ground. Is there no place of safety for the refugees?

The word in the tavern is not good. A town only a bit to the south has been razed. The king’s guard (hah, like they can do a thing), has advised evacuation. For many zefies, the third in a month. You mill about, looking for news when you come to a merchant. He says, “Here, read this.”
The fortress Boltcraft
Report of Gilgame merchant company
We were very surprised to find this small settlement still running after half of a year. Yet, after interviewing the zefies, it is no wonder. There are a grand total of seven citizens at the current moment. Five of them have trained in some capacity as knights. They told us that all who seek refuge are asked to come. They said that they had enough rooms for a horde of refugees. In return for clothes, food, drink, and leather; they gave us fine mechanisms made of gold. Could this be the hope for zefies everywhere?

You ponder over the words on the paper. It could be lies, a trap, and death. Or it could be salvation. You must decide, will you venture to Boltcraft?

I would like a zefie with some skill in melee (axe if possible) called RAWR, known for being hardcore and going into killing rages

Discussion on zefie military forces:

The current zefies who are soldiers are all trained in varying degrees of wrestling, knighthood, shield use, and armor use. They are all currently legendary miners and have one rank in armoring or weaponsmithing. If you guys would like one of these, I can give them to you.

I renamed the military professions for my (our) zefies.

Marksdwarves are known as snipers.
Hammerers are hammerzefies.
Spears are called defenders.
Axmen were called reservists.
Sword users were dubbed Knights.
For fun, Mace dwarves were called baseball zefies.
(Maces were renamed to bats)

My plans for the fort involved training the entire fortress in either axe or crossbow.
I could take one of the current knights and have him focus on wrestling for you, Iluogo.
I could make Snoop and Rawr the backbone of the reserve force (give Rawr the title of Drill Sarge maybe . . .)
Does this work for everyone?

I'll have a proper update tonight maybe. I'll use the above options if no one has any problems. None of you will start with much skill though.

This all sounds good! Drill Sarge is a position RAWR would definitely like. A quick google images on Zefie brought up pictures of a character from .hack or something.. weird!

Make me a woodcrafter/cutter of some variety and name him/her Woodswalker.

We have several peasant crafters for stone and bone.
We also just got a legendary leatherworker.
The woodworker will be easyish to do. Now I have to forge TWO axes.
<Sigh>

Iluogo was down in the barracks training. He decked his commander, Asit, and then tackled one of the newbies, Spartacus or something. Asit then called a halt, “Okay everyone! Good work. I can see that we are all getting better at unarmed work. Once our magma channels fill some more, we will have better armor. Eventually, even axes and swords. Until then . . .”
The knight was interrupted by a scream. A girlish, wimpy scream. Iluogo cursed and said, “The elves!” In a flash, the fighter rushed up the stairs, on his way to the trade depot.
Asit shouted, “Rawr, follow Iluogo! Protect the elves at all costs! We need their good will! Ducim, round up all able zefies, prepare for war. Everyone else, get some improvised weapons and CHARGE!”

Iluogo rounded the corner and ran up the stairs. The first thing that he saw was the camel that belonged to the elves. Iluogo wondered “Why the bloody hell are the elves running away up into the old storage levels? Didn’t we seal them off? Wait, where are the goblins?!?”
Iluogo then saw it. A lone kobold thief. Memories flashed through the brawler’s mind. His old village. The bowbolds. The fires . . . Iluogo resolved to kill it thing. When the thief saw the angry zefie, it tried to run. However, zefies are very much noted for a sprinting ability. In a flash Iluogo was on top of the kobold. The two combatants were about the same size. The kobold was a bit taller than Iluogo and probably heavier. The zefie, being spherical, was wider.
The thief drew a large knife. Iluogo’s first strike broke that arm. His second damaged the left hip. A minute later, the kobold was nothing more than a stain. The elves came back down the stairs to find Iluogo guarding the entrance to the fort. When the mechanic, Zulban, came to trade, the elves complained about security.
They changed their tune when Iluogo glared at them. Zulban managed to trade the entire caravan for one of his gold mechanisms.

Zulban had decided that a conference room would be the next project for the new miners. Several of the more important zefies were crowded in the dining room. He had thought that the original plans would be big enough. 12 chairs should have been enough. There was:
•   Zulban Fametrade- Obviously, lord knows he was running the place.
•   Woodswalker- a strange zefie, ‘Woody’ had invited himself.
•   Imush Wheelcites- Imush was one of the foremost members of the community, being a legendary leatherworker.
•   Z-crafter BoltedEagles- One of the crafters, his partner, Inod, had deigned to keep working, trusting Z for the crafting outlook.
•   Endok Flagticked- She had shown up unwillingly, she had seeds to plant!
•   Atis Sinewsalves- The leader of the armed forces. Very stolid zefie.
•   Iluogo- Didn’t he have a last name? The wrestler had apparently insisted to come along.
•   Ducim Workdawns- Atis’ usual aide, the knight had offered up his chair.
•   Snoopicus- Being commander (and sole member) of the zefie ranged force, he was there.
•   RAWR- The drill sergeant in training, he had been trying to get Snoop to install bayonets on the crossbows, and to count him as ranged because he could throw his axe. RAWR hadn’t noticed where they were going, and didn’t want Snoopicus to give him the slip, so he stayed.
•   Ral Roughdimpled- The soap maker turned cook had served crumpet and then decided to stay, he needed to ‘gauge the reactions of the advanced flavonoid combinations.’ No one liked them, although Ral’s ability to gauge zefie moods was not well known.
•   Dasot Blazesinks- The brewer was similar. When he had served the root beer, he said “This is WAY too good to waste on you losers. Move the hell over Iluogo.”
•   Edem Woundpointy- A peasant who had definitely not been invited. She refused to interrupt her cold plump helmet breakfast for the meeting.

Zulban started the meeting, “As I’m sure you all know, this is a relatively nice location. We have just about every feature we could possibly want. However, we have had a bit of trouble finding iron.”
Asit broke in, “We found one small vein of the stuff, but we used all of it on anvils. For the record, who told the blacksmith to repeatedly make anvils?”
Iluogo, Snoopicus, and RAWR responded, “Wasn’t me, sir!”

Zulban wondered why he had to be in charge. “The things I do for zefiekind,” he mused.
“ANYWAY, we also found an underground pool. We would use it for water, but it was mistakenly drained.”
This time it was Ducim who piped up, “How was I supposed to know that the up stair case I dug was in the middle of the lake!? It was a fluke I tell you!”

Zulban seriously considered borrowing Snoopicus’s crossbow. He could probably keep order that way . . .
“Fortunately, there seems to be several iron veins in the walls of the now empty pond. Unfortunately, there are assorted creatures in there. Sergeant RAWR?”

Obviously, it was not RAWR who spoke first. Endok quietly asked, “Are we almost done, Zulban? I have to water the cave roots and,” she quailed under Zulban’s glare, “and Ummm stuff.”

Zulban slumped over. His upper fluff hit the table with a thud. A slightly disquieted RAWR started, “As far as we can tell, there are ten hostile creatures in the lake bed. There is a mix of frogmen and lizardmen. Additionally, there are several cave spider webs; we have to be careful not to be bitten.”

Zulban’s large yellow eyes looked up from the table, “So everyone, what should our course of action be?”

We could cage them. The military could wipe them out. We could crush them in a cave-in I guess . . .

Also Iluogo is elite now!

Sorry about the little gap folks. For more info, read my increasingly frustrated posts in Moral Anam. Today’s tale involves a zefie known as Woodswalker . . .
 * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * *
Woodswalker did not often associate with the other zefies. It wasn’t that she didn’t like them, it was that she liked to be alone. Her workshop was on the entrance level of the fortress. It was a very big room. There were only two workshops, her carpenter’s spot and Imush’s leather working station. There was a small leather stockpile (at least you could keep THAT stuff in bins) and a medium size armor dump (Woodswalker considered building some more bins for all the nice quality stuff that Imush produced). The rest of the space was devoted to the very large wood stock. Woodswalker had had her deforestation plan approved by Zulban. If several zefies were to deforest the surrounding woods, Boltcraft could build up a sizable bit of extra wood. Because, as far as they knew, no goblins knew about the fort, they could gather the wood in safety. When the gobs did come, the zefies could stay inside. Extra wood was cheap to buy anyway.
Woodswalker slowly walked away from her workshop, a quick stroll around the trade depot would be nice. Then she saw it! A kobold thief! Woodswalker hefted her ax, carried even though there would be no more tree cutting, and gave chase. The kobold turned and ran. A scared kobold can run fast. Zefies are faster. The kobold tripped and went sprawling. Woodswalker leapt. Quicker than thought, the kobold turned around and stabbed with its dagger. Woodswalker felt a sharp pain in her eye. She couldn’t see through it, it had been gouged out!
The normally demure Woodswalker let out a shout, (Iluogo came running from a level down) and chased after the bastard. She got closer and swung her ax, a blow to remove the thing’s head. The strike missed. Woodswalker realized that, with only one eye, her depth perception was off. In the pause, the kobold kept sprinting. Woodswalker ran again. This strike she removed part of the creature’s hand. Screaming, the Kobold continued to dash from the aggravated zefie. Woodswalker (runner) caught up. The screaming stopped.
Woodswalker quietly used her yellow sash to cover the spot where her eye used to be. She went and told Atis that she was qualified as a reservist now. . .

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *  * * * * * * * * * *

Woody remained ecstatic the whole time too. Iluogo has become a champ. RAWR and Atis are both masters of their respective disciplines. Snoop is proficient. Mirza had been added. All of my original knights who I didn’t mention have spine damage. Sigh. Also, what do you guys think that we should do with the drained pond? I sort of like the idea of Atis (now sporting FULL GCS CHITTIN ARMOR!!) killing them all, but I need your ideas! We also have an immigrant knight by the name of Olon who I have big plans for. Also, there is a metal smith whose last name is armorplanes. I changed his first name to Warthog. I couldn’t resist. I’m also building an arena over the magma pipe so that the goblins we caught can have some ‘fun.’
More great things to come!!
 -Strife out

P.s. Did you know that if you trade GCS chitin stuff to elves, the say the poor GENTLE creature!?

Well I think the monsters should be caged. Good fodder for the arena, or maybe some kind of zoo is in order? Zefies turning the tables on the big bad outside world.

I’m so glad that someone cared enough to post. However, I already cleared out the pond. It’s going to be an interesting write up I think. We do currently have six goblins caged in the second arena.

Snoopicus and the goblins
Snoopicus and the reptiles
Refugee problems
The First Siege of Boltcraft
Olon’s fate.
Olon’s reversal*
Zulban’s great reorganization*
The Arena
Something else, I’m sure .  . .

*denotes not yet happened game wise*

I’ll try to keep up a one story a day schedule. If anyone wants to join, we have adoptions available! Also, there are lots of unskilled and semi-skilled people available. And one axe-lord too!
Pictures too!
