Challenge: Build a Ship!
« on: June 19, 2008, 08:32:36 am »

Challenge:Build an ocean worthy vessel! Or at least an approximation of one.

First, settle on an ocean map.

Second, build a drydock by pumping out and walling off the sea. This should be about 3 z-levels deep, either by mining it out after draining it or somehow draining a 3 z-level deep part of the ocean. Bonus points for not digging it. Don't forget a way to let the sea back in.

Then build a ship-shaped (har har) fortress entirely out of wood. Bonus for using only one kind of material, starting on a treeless map or making the ship out of metal instead. The bottom of the hull touching the sea floor should be made of walls instead of floors, don't want a thin hull. The hull should be curved, it's a ship not a box! Don't forget one or more masts and a crows nest is a must. Attach it to the shoreline with a gangplank bridge (can be retracting or raising as long as it is attached to the ship), and possibly make a plank for any nobles that arrive to walk. Bonus for making clear glass portholes below the waterline. Build it on top of a support for added 'floating' effect. The deck should be 2 z-levels above the water line so you can fit ballistas in the floor below it, with fortification holes for them to shoot out of. Ooh, and a figurehead of some sort. And any other things you can think of. Bonus for figuring out a way to make sails, and double bonus if the sails are made of a particular silk. Big bonus if the ship can house all of your dwarves and stockpiles. Another bonus for building your leader opulent quarters at the stern of the ship.

After the ship is finished, open the floodgates and refill the drydock. Completely destroying a section of the wall big enough for your ship to pass through (if it could actually move) is preferable. Then get all your dwarves on the ship, raise the gangplank and live on it for a season or two. Bonus for drinking only rum. Bonus for acquiring a pet monkey, naming your leader Captain somethingbeard, having chests of gold coins in the hold and giving all your dwarves assorted piratey nicknames. Bonus for no metal armor and using only sabres for melee weapons.

If a version with prosthetics has come around by the time you do this, bonus for hooks and peglegs.

Yar! Avast!  :D

I was thinking about this, but more in the sense of making a river in my fortress and letting a raft filled with supplies float down the river to isolated warehouses.
