I'm STUCK! Well, not me personally... and not really stuck
« on: June 19, 2008, 06:01:56 am »

After diggin' a bit, hunting the old adamantine veins, I've discovered something. Around Z = 129, it stops... depth does not exist, channel and downstair designations don't stick, no adamantine, nor magma have been found, despite my 14 miners (5 legendary) powdering rock faster than the speed of sound. Any ideas? Is this a bug or just a mechanic? Or am I missing summat...

That had crossed my mind. But there are 129 more layers to dig through!

You git the bottom of the fortress.
Also note you cannot dig into the outermost wall of your fortress.

Blast. Okydoky, looks like I'm going to be out of fuel if the elves enforce their green treaty. *sigh* and it was going so well! Guess it's time to find out how to kill everyone.

*nods* This, I know. "because the wiki tells me so" well, actually through intuition as well. But I had high hopes. Large amounts of metamorphic and igneous extrusive and intrusive. No matter, found some coal.

Magma doesn't always go to the bottom of the map. Sometimes, it only goes down a few z-levels below the surface.

Regional Prospector can help a lot for finding magma and stuff, but it only works before you embark.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Unless you specifically look for them, probably using Regional Prospector, most maps will lack the following:

* magma
* adamantite
* underground water supplies (i.e. undeground lake or undeground river)
* chasms

In particular, every mountain tile on the middle of the three embark maps (i.e. not the local map, not the world map) has 1 adamant pit, 1 chasm, and 1 underground water supply, if I recall correctly. They'll be scattered throughout the mountain tiles on the local map, so odds are pretty low of getting those features unless you a) cheat, or b) embark onto a huge region.

Adamantine has the same symbol as caves and stuff though, so you may want to be careful. I thought mine was gonna have adamantine, had a bronze collosus in the cave. About 5 minutes into the game, all dwarves were dead

What I like to do when I'm really lost is to open up tweak and just hit reveal. Remember though, exit the game after that WITHOUT saving.

What happened to finding it all on your own? That's what I do.

I had a pretty nice spot though, and my Dwarves were dieing because I had based my food supply off of fish production. In an environment that unfortunately can evaporate two layers of 7/7 water and had yet to find the caver rive/lake.

yeah, I prefer it that way. I mean, yes, it's time consuming and the old "you've struck <insert rock here>" ever minute gets annoying, but it gives a large portion of the dwarven population something to do with their day.

I wish there was a way to turn off "Sir! We've found rock of a slightly different color from all the other rocks!", but designating huge areas for exploratory mining certainly adds to the challenge. There you are in the middle of positioning troops to repel goblins and "Sir! We found ROCKS!" yanks you down to the bottom of the map...
