A haunting message from Armok, in NetHack!
« on: March 24, 2008, 03:17:00 am »

I realize that Nethack is not Dwarf Fortress, but this was just too amazing not to show, and relates very strongly to DF.

I had just fought off a small platoon of Gnomes (the colored items are where their equipment dropped), when I got up from the computer to do something. My brother was the first to notice; he called be back to look at the screen and I froze in astonished awe at a scene I hadn't noticed before. It was an omen. Armok does not exist within the Nethack source code, but yet HE IS THERE...

@ is me    h is a friendly hobbit    % are gnome corpses   ) are said gnomes' equipment

"Engraved on your perception is an image of a human knight, a hobbit, dark caverns, gnomes, and a giant elephant. The human knight is talking with the hobbit. The gnomes are dead. The dark caverns, gnomes, human knight, and hobbit are in the shape of a giant elephant.
This is an Armok rendition of your impending doom."

I discovered Nethack very recently. It has made me very anxious to see what the future of DF Adventure Mode holds. So far I've never made it deeper than 9 levels.

For those who don't know about Nethack, almost every level is randomly generated, including this one. So it's insane that such a clear picture would emerge.

Because the game is just so profound and amazing (and shares much with DF's "losing is fun" slogan), I'm considering making a topic about it in the "other games" forum. Anyone who has played the game, please pipe up here. If there are enough, I'll start the topic and provide a link.

Oh my lord this is a terrible omen for you, and all else who see this.   Way to go; you've killed us all!

I've played nethack and I love it.  Perhaps its the massive lack of sleep I'm getting but what exactly am I supposed to be seeing in that picture?

EDIT: Oh wait, I do see it!  How could I have missed such a blatant picture?

Another game with a similar play style, although slightly more... transparent in mechanics, is Tales of Middle Earth- ToME. http://t-o-m-e.net/

Don't get the alpha 3.0 version (I think- last I tried it it was vastly inferior to the current 2.0 release)

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

The visible portion of the level looks like an elephant, with the @ around where an eye should be.

I had a near ascension once.  My steed was a jabborwock, and I used a dead cockatrice to defeat most of the devils and demons in the abyss area.  I had died 7 times and had a number of amulets of life saving and still had a few wishes left from my wand of wishes, and a blessed magic lamp.

My big problem was that my spellbooks were starting to fade, I didn't have a decent magic marker and my knowledge of Finger of Death was starting to become twisted, so I couldn't even write it down again from memory.  I saved the game, copied an image of the drive, and... started new, rather than fail!

Armok guides us all =).
Don't you notice, the game is just a promise of future awesomeness and Toady+bro are just his humble priests. And we're just cultists, worshipping him through the DF: unaware, possessed, zombified...
