Roughest Start
« on: June 17, 2008, 05:54:41 pm »

The fisherdwarf was first to be dragged away, by tigerfish.

Then the herbalist, the lumberjack, and the guy taking a break outside, by a Fire Man who swam out of the vent and spewed magma all over them, one by one.

Two miners then offed themselves in a lake, because hey, it's easier than procreation.

The only one to survive was Urist the Mechanic, Expedition Leader. When I was certain she was going to go fling herself in the river, some migrants thought it would be a good idea to come live in my hole in the hill where dwarves go to die. I was never so glad to see a herd of accomplished cheese makers.

Urist's condition has since improved to 'unhappy'.

Also: All these hippos and carps.

Urist will live forever. You can be sure of that. But I also think she is the force behind all these deaths...

I suppose that the miners took their picks with them into the lake? cause that's pesky.

Divert the river into the volcano to kill the hippos. Make sure to divert a pocket for forge purposes beforehand just in case.

Rough starts are more fun.

I started on an evil piece of coastline and started to burrow into the cliffs.  The only alarming wildlife I saw to begin with was a giant leopard on the hills above the cliff, so everything looked pretty good.  Then, just as I was starting to carve out the first bedrooms and manufacture the beds, a dozen zombie tuna beached themselves in the next bay along.

Zombie tuna?  I guess I'm safe, because they're fish, and they're now stuck on the beach, right?

Nope, zombie tuna can apparently walk.  And they run faster than a dwarf.  They immediately bit the head off my experienced marksdwarf that I brought along as a bodyguard, then chased down both of my miners, killing them far away from the fortress entrance.

I had already called the survivors inside at this point, and the tuna had become more interested in ripping my mule apart, but the food supplies were still outside on the beach.  So the guys are now trapped in a tiny cave with no food, no equipment and deadly wildlife outside.

I abandoned at that point, which with hindsight was a shame, as I thought of some interesting solutions afterwards (mostly involving live bait).

Okay, so after hearing about the island fortress(Thanks to interesting river placement) I decide to look for one myself. You know what happens?

I'm stuck on a map with half of it covered by carp/hippo/crock infested river. Thats rather bad, right? It gets worse. There is a HUGE waterfall on the map, taking up a sixth of the 3x3 area. With the map being a grand total of 2 z-levels in ground variation, the waterfall starts to flood the map. And the wagon started next to the waterfall.

So I need to have my dwarves quickly move my stuff into a hastily made cave underneath the waterfall, trying to not attract attention from all these dangerous beasties. Then I need to make a wall, not for enemies, but to stop the flooding. By Sumer using all my wood I was able to make a fully sealed fortress. Grand, continue searching for that magma pocket!

Nobody died, but any migrants/traders/invaders that don't spawn next to my fortress are getting killed.

I thought I was somewhere completely safe. There was no evil creatures on the list, the lava was sealed away in a cavern and no goblins or kobolds had poked their heads out on the civ list yet.

Then I get :

Mountain Goat has become beserk!
Mc Miner has been struck down.
Mountain Goat is no longer beserk.

I was then chasing three of the bloody things around inside my fortress. So I drafted everybody, waited for them to regroup and rushed them. I took out the named goat and one of his collegues. The other one escaped outside and ran a good distance so I let it go.

1. Entire crew blasted by Fire Imp within first real 10 minutes of game play.

2. Started on map with bronze colossus.  Avoided him for awhile.  Nuf said.

Settled right next to a magma pipe.
Next thing I know, a fire imp comes out and blasts the wagon, along with a few dwarves and the dogs.

Flaming dwarves all over the place, while the two that remained were drafted.
They didn't make it.

It was fun though.

As soon I got in a dozen 'dingos' invaded! My hunter was Exstatic (Enjoyed work) before subcurbing to the tide. He killed 30 (!) of them with his x-bow. Then my mechanic was next, trying to beat them with a stone (went insane, Hunter was friend) Then my miners, good luck they had 5 mining and armour/sheild skill and armour shields but where drowned (it actually said Urist drowned!) in the sea of dingos. I abandoned after my craftsdwarf, with no supplies, walled himself into a cliff with the few stones that were mined. God dame what ever Dingos are!

Dingos are Australian canines that live in the outback and are about as beloved by Australian ranchers as coyotes are by ranchers in the Western US.  Now you know what it is that you hate!

I was just playing on a map where I thought I had lava, water, cave water, all the basics. Then I found out about the Etten Cave. All in all, it was a pretty tame cave, but the etten comes charging out first thing. I get all the dwarves into one squad, led by the woodcutter and miner, and charge it. I had Combat Reports turned on, and it turns out that they knocked it out right away and slowly pulled it apart. Hee hee.

There's also a whole stack of them on Fraiser Island.
