I figured that Armok was basically the forum's mascot...

And he can be overly arrogant at times, often assuming more authority than he actually has (for instance, the act of registering under the name "Armok"), but  he's really not bad enough to warrant some of the hits he gets from time to time.  Sure, I've wanted to post similarly aggressive opinions against him, but that's in-the-moment stuff and can easily be avoided for the sake of preserving the community.

Toady does read things outside of the bug reports and suggestions forum, and he's not adverse to the occasional well-written paragraph.  However, he probably does not assign nearly as much importance to most of the stories since he's looking at it from outside our little hyped-up group of worshipfulness.  When you stop being so excited and just look in from the outside at some of these stories, they stop being quite so impressive.

I realize that I am one of very few people in that I have not finished reading any of the more "epic" tales.  I was mildly amused by Boatmurdered, sidetracked while reading Nist Akath, and unimpressed with both installments of the Kobold's Quest series.  I keep quiet about such things, as I realize it would serve little purpose other than to cause unrest among the forumites, and that's not really one of my goals.

This forum really is an amazing place, and it has served as something of a safe haven from the rest of the idiocy "outside".  I try to keep this forum the way I want it to be, because I want to stomach being here for at least a while longer.  As such, I try to maintain my own gag order on controversial opinions, and I will try to resolve whatever conflicts are in my power to resolve -or at least calm down.

We can feel bad about whatever information may be lost on a forum transfer, but we will always make it through.  I would sometimes be relieved when a new version of DF came around, because it meant I had a reason to do away with all of the old half-completed fortresses and ideas in order to make way for new ones.  Regardless of what happens or what software powers the forum, the members will always try to preserve the incredibly refreshing decency of our little half-crazy community.

Now please stop fighting in my topic, I made it on the forum instead of only email/PM so that others could read Toadys response, not so they could comment the tune the question was asked in.

I am curious to what Toady would say, but he may very well not have much info to give us at the moment other than that it's planned.

I mean, I'm planning on re attending computer repair school for fall semester.  But I couldn't tell you what classes I'm taking, what my schedule will be or anything like that yet, because I haven't looked into it enough.  I just know I will.

EDIT:Spelling. And...stuff.

I don't think Armok is being arrogant. A little geeky perhaps (but then again, so are most of us), but not hostile as far as I can see. The title of the thread looks slightly bossy (especially the "now" part), but other than that I think Armok sounds friendly, if a bit desperate.

It's pointless to talk about losing the source actually, since common sense dictates Toady backs up every release on removable media or a separate drive. If I were putting that much work into something, I'd burn a CD with each release and stick them in a safe desposit box. Not that much work compared to rewriting so much code.

Just relax. Boulder in the river, man. It'll all work out fine. And if it doesn't, we'll survive somehow.</STRONG>

RPPR Interview with Tarn Adams, Creator of Dwarf Fortress

RPPR: This next question is from crackbaby (heh heh): what are you doing to backup the source code? What if you lose all the source code in a crash? Distribute cool-aid to all the fans and yourself?

TA: Nah, see suicide is not the answer. But, I'd be distraught if I lost everything so I back it up. I don't have it online anywhere, I'm kind of paranoid about that whole thing having some kind of online send-your-source-code-off-to-somewhere repository sourceforgy  type thing or whatever. For some reason, I don't know if it's just 'cus I'm an old fogy or something, but it just doesn't feel secure to me. So I burn CDs. I just burn CDs. I've got CDs scattered all over everywhere, not just in my apartment, but other places as well theres CDs.

And so if my apartment were burglarized and they stole the laptop I'd be a day back. If my apartment burned down I'd probably be three or four days back. And, you know, if we had some kind of North Korean situation where we lost the state of Washington, well that'd be the last of my worries I guess, where the source was.  But, I think I'm all right.

I had a problem I think, before I released [Dwarf Fortess], maybe a year before I released it, where I got set two weeks back. That's when I tightened things up a little bit. I don't forget to back up now, I always back up and I always leave stuff off-site and so on. So I'm not that worried about it, I don't think I need to go do anything online or anything. And I don't know anything about RAID or Hard Drives and all that kind of stuff; I just burn CDs, I just burn lots of CDs. I mean theres all kinds of things. I think I've got an External Hard Drive sitting on the floor over here somebody gave me for Christmas or something, I haven't used that yet, I could probably use that too. Nothing fancy.

...

Gah, fingers hurt.    :(

Anyway yeah, there you go. Unless the North Koreans decide to take over Toady's state we're fine source code wise.

Edit: And please, if you haven't already listened to the interview, do so. There's a lot of information in it and I'm trying to type up a transcript of it to the best of my (limited) abilities, but you'll be missing out on

1. Internet hostility: very easy to get rid of. 90% of the time uneccesary. Only good for obvious trolls. Armok is not a troll.

2. I would enjoy seeing what Toady thinks about the community stories. I imagine him and his brother cracking up over Ironblood. But still, it would be great.

3. Judging from the interview, Toady sounded like a robot took over his life. That or he made one to make public appearances so he could focus on DF.

4. We must defend Washington state from the Koreans! With PATRIOTISM!

Toady and I have discussed moving the Forum just a little while ago. Some insights there for those that want them.

Except that these forums are almost completely unmoderated, except for spammers and such. We're just having a very lively discussion about protecting the board we all spend so much time on.

I'm pretty sure Toady reads the community threads since he sometimes comments on them. Last I saw of it he was mentioning Valcon's community pirate ship in Future of the Fortress. I'm not sure if the other FotF threads are gone now, but I'm pretty sure he mentions other community games and stories as well.

Hell, even I haven't read ALL of the community threads, but I don't see why this forum would be very hard to back up. All the messages are stored in some file on a server, probably, ready to archive.

Next time, if you already know that what you post sounds so hostile that you have to apologize for it in the same post, then just don't post it, or change it accordingly. Unless you really want it to be hostile, and then there is no reason to apologize.

And I think any hostility here was totally uncalled for, to the point it is downright confusing. Also, and this should be something you really should care about, it probably much more hampered your goal than it helped. A simple

"Hey Toady, if you're (ever) going to upgrade the forum, are you going to backup the old threads somehow?"

would have been not only nicer, but probably also actually effective... no?

Edit: And, as Dasleah pointed out, there was actually a discussion several days ago, in which Toady's last post contained

quote:

I don't suppose it would be the end of the world to just eventually have that forum be the forum and stop new threads on this one, if nothing can be migrated.

So, nothing about deleting the old forum... not that asking itself hurts, but why this?

Here's the last I'll say about it. This is the post I think any normal person would have made in Armok's place, given his concerns. Feel free to compare to the quoted OP below.

So I heard the interview (link) and I'm worried about losing all our great forum content! I'm writing this so Toady can publicly talk about his plans for conversion to new forum software. I sure hope he doesn't just wipe it all. So Toady:

1: Do you back up the forums like you do the source?
2: How much of the community stuff do you read, and how much influences your work?

But maybe I'm just a lot more laid-back than most.

quote:
Originally posted by Armok:

This is serious, I want TOADYS answers, and whiting reasonable time.
Sorry to do such a hostile sounding thread, you know we love you to the point you'd consider unhealthy, I sometimes even get guilty because I check the forums so often I might strain the server.
This was triggered but the interview today, I just cant hold this any more.

Ok, to to the interrogation.

First a light one; how do you back up there forums?
I know the source code of DF is safe, so this is a question concerning the safety of the other most important thing in my life; all these wonderful stories and discussions, many of which I haven't even read yet.
Rely, if I knew these forums were as safe as the source operantly is it would lift a terrible weight from my shoulders.

Second question, an more important one even than that;

DO YOU READ THE COMMUNITY'S STORIES?

Really, how many and which ones?
Boatmurdered? Nist Akath? A Kobolds Quest? All the stuff linked
here?
What about the seemingly unrelated ones? Like this?
And if so, how much inspiration do you take from there?
One of you great goals whit this game was to make it create stories, and it is, but you must also let the stories flow the other way, your brother is not the only one that can write stories worthy of inspiration.
Please do read something other than the bug reports.
Actually, I'd at least personally if this in not the case go so far as to even read up on the best pieces at the cost of developing speed if necessary.
Don't get so obsessed at nurturing the tree that you forget to harvest the fruit.

[/overly serious]
And I know this can be taken the wrong way, sorry for that.</STRONG>
