Most depressing sight?
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:07:12 pm »

What's the most tragic thing your fortress has ever experienced?

One of the untrained dogs in my fortress was outside during a goblin ambush. Luckily, so was my entire fortress guard. The goblins were decimated in about 3 seconds, but in that time one of them slashed the pup in the face.

Struck out both his eyes and gave him a yellow head wound. He just wanders around aimlessly, falling unconcious, then getting back up and stumbling for a few more squares. He won't even die from it, I don't think. I have a feeling I'm going to go Old Yeller on him soon. :(

For some odd reason, while I was building a floor hanging off the side of the mountain two dwarves decided to get married and hold their wedding in the meeting area right under construction. Some people where still working on the above floor. And, due to a miscalculation on my part, there was a a cavein on the wedding. The wife died. The husband suffered red damage to his arms, yellow to one of his legs, red on the other leg, and I think there was brain damage too.

I've heard of throwing rice at the couple but that's just ridiculous.

I've had fortresses full of dogs that limp behind their owners and pass out constantly. I usually assign them to the wounded so their animal caretaker skill goes up.

Most tragic thing I've seen... I once had this planter called Athel Emitherith. She kept on throwing tantrums and beat the crap out of a cat, a jewler, a noble, destroyed a field, and broke a restraint. She survived something like 8 beatings and hundred day jail sentences, a hammerstrike, and a 4 z-level fall. She just survived everything my fort threw at her, and eventually became a triple triple legendary and made an artifact turtle shell left gauntlet. She was pretty much the most awsomesauce epic person in mah fort. One day, out of nowhere, she went berserk and started killing a crossbowman. The other 5 crossbowmen shot her to shreds, but she still managed to beat the guy to death and walked about 5 tiles making pools of blood before she finally died with the most colorful wounds list I've ever seen.

In DF, that custom could be lethal! Hire a firing squad while you are at it.

I currently have a puppy in the middle of my fortress with a mangled front right paw. Even though I have like five Animal Caretaker trained dwarves, they seem to ignore him. Oh, and the other dogs sometimes gather around him  :'(.

Animal caretaking doesn't really work right now. The dwarf will look at the wounded animal and gain a little experience, but the animal isn't helped.

So, it's more like "Knowledge (Animal Anatomy)" than anything else. Still gives stat boosts, naturally.

Saying "Hi" To that guy you sometimes see near the well gives you stat boosts, so...

5 fisherdwarves in a row showing up at the edge of my desert fort.  "Gee, thanks, guys, but the ponds all dried up 6 years ago."

Sorry for OT but can dwarves arrange weddings? I have never seen that.

Yeah, if you have a meeting hall and two dwarves get hitched, they can throw a party.

It's the same as normal parties, i think.
