Poll on Signatures
« on: June 16, 2008, 08:07:29 pm »

Note that you can turn off signatures entirely in your profile, but this will turn off text signatures as well.  There are a lot of options, so a consensus solution will be drawn up from related options if necessary.

For reference:

60 pixels

100 pixels

150 pixels

Personally, I feel that image-bearing signatures are annoying and fill up space- especially if someone's post is a two word reply to a question and their signature is a four paragraph article on dwarf reproduction with full color diagrams or something.    It's just bad ettiquette to have 'em around taking up a bunch of space, y'know?

I'd like to also take the time to mention that while I'm accepting of small text sigs, using your signature to sign your name is also pointless since it's already included in your post.    I hope others understand what I mean when I say adding

*~Capntastic~*

to the end of each of my posts is totally superfluous.

Whatever the result is, I like the use of the poll, and I think that this will be very useful and benefit the forum if we can come to a conclusive decision.

I find 100 pixels tall is right about mainstream(experience from seeing other forums),this will probably please the crowd the most,those that don't like image signatures can just turn them off.(right?)
150 is just excessive.

Another thing to factor in is that sig images, even if capped at a certain height, tend to be pretty wide and may take a while to load on slower connections.

 While cool things can be done with signature images(Like having a dwarf hit a goblin off a cliff, only to splatter in the signature), I feel this will be abused much more than it will be useful. Or else we get monsters like this:

 http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/gaia-community-discussion/excuse-me-i-was-here-before-you/t.41057057/

 It's not excessive, but you can see the problems. If you are not blinded by the whitespace/morons, you can see some signatures taking up the space of a small post. Of course, those forums are more leisurely browsed and ours are more hardcore, but you can see why I would not want signature images.

 Signatures should always be less than half the height of a post. Or else they become distracting.

Jesus Christ on an adamantium wafer, not Gaia. Anything but Gaia.

I'd like to add that I'm for 100px sigs and avatars, with an option to disable them. Best of both worlds.

A user can select to not view signatures or even avatars.

I prefer 60px signature images, but I can deal with 100px images and that's what everyone else seems to like, so let's go with that.

And the news feature isn't annoying in the slightest.

There will need to be a limit on the image size, otherwise I can foresee that someone will have the bright idea to fill their signature with some huge (Byte wise) image.

The news feature is very discreet, I didn't even notice it at first.

Images go in the avatar. Text goes in the sig. This makes the most sense in terms of compactness of display, since there's a lot of otherwise-wasted space in the avatar slot.

If you really need to show an image that doesn't fit in the avatar area, you can make a post for it. Other forums I've been on have often ended up having a gallery/art-oriented subforum for this kind of thing.

i second this exactly.

probably a failing of my own

Oh sweet, this forum has a news feature!

Edit:  It seems that 3-6 lines is popular.

Just as an aside, this poll would have worked better if you'd split out the two parameters. E.g.:

For text signatures, I would prefer:
* Nothing
* 1-2 lines
* 3-6 lines
* etc.

For image signatures, I would prefer:
* Nothing
* Only images shorter than 60 pixels
* Only images shorter than 100 pixels
* etc.

It's nothing you can't figure out after the fact, but I don't want this to be a situation where e.g. the no-images-at-all people "lost" because they split their votes on how big of a text signature they allow, when the image signature people all chose the same thing.

 @ Derakon: Of course, that would mean we could noly vote once on either the image limits or text limits. Say I want a smuch text as I want, but no images. How would I represent that with one vote?

 Toady could make two threads, but that seems a little wasteful.
