Starsoar - Dwarven Spaceship
« on: June 16, 2008, 01:41:42 am »

Map in hand, the dwarves- the first seven members of The Smith of Vessels- finally arrived at the location that had been selected for the construction of quite possibly the greatest project of Dwarfkind. This would be Starsoar, the Dwarven Steam-Powered Spacecraft. Soon, the project could begin. For now, they just had to not starve.

!!The magma pool in the south-west has fire imps that must be captured alive- they will be installed in the thruster of the rocket and water poured onto them, producing "smoke" from the rocket. Until you are ready to capture them, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when/if tapping the pool.!!

There are trees and plants in the northwest corner, and the magma has some suitable creatures, so the special effects (steam) will work. The main reason I did this was as a compromise- It must be the only place on five maps with magma and marble and cliffs and surface water and and and. The only other thing I couldn't get was sand, just loamy sand, so some modding may be required for bulk glass windows.

Fortress Log of the Smith of Vessels
Where be crafted Starsoar

[The first few pages of the log have been blown away by some fantastic force.]

1st Malachite, 1051:
We lost Tulon, the herbalist, today. A Kobold came up by our cart where we're storing the Pitchblende. Tulon did what any of us would do and lept on him! We heard the scuffle and started to hurry over, but by the time we made it, they where both dead. Tulon was as brave as any a dwarf did live.

16th:
More theviery! This time it's macaues. They took a sock and a tunic. At least the Pitchblende is still safe. It's being moved down to the construction platform for safer storage- the walls I mentioned earlyer are up on the northern pass. The well is also nearly clear of rubble and we should get to have clear water available up in the command station. We will establish a large filling device for the water tanks once they are completed.

14th: A copper vein near the surface has provided us with a source of the essential metal. We'll start to-[several pages are missing]

[Char and damage to the page has left the date unreadable]
...egun digging of the pit. Digging down deep to produce a workable area for the dock of the craft. I advise future supervisors to dig a layer at a time and to first dig ramps, then remove any remainders, then begin again. This way no miners get trapped by their own foolishness.

I'm going to have to pass this turn. I've been trying to edit zefies into DF, and I don't want to risk messing everything up.

Metal Chao, I suppose that you're up. Feel free to write about more than three events.

Well... Umm...

I downloaded the save.
I can't really start yet.

You see you only posted about three events in the entire year and put no pictures.
I have no idea what you were doing and what I should be doing because of that, or what each building is.
That's all well and good in a general succession, like in boat murdered where nobody had any idea what was going on, but we have a goal here.
And they at least wrote something!

There's an enormous pit, am I meant to build it in there?
Or is it that partially engraved area?
Or is it where you built all those rooms? Isn't the point that we're meant to live inside?

So yeah. I'll need to know some more stuff first.

Sorry- I should have written more.

The smoothed areas are just for decoration. The large pit area is still under construction- it should be as deep as possible in order to build an appreciably large spaceship. There are a few basic rooms up on the area near the wagon for the dwarves, but it is intended only as a temporary place to stay. Up in the cliff to the south from the pit is the "command area" which is mostly for decoration as well, but it could someday have the mayor's office in there. Note that I have found the Lava pool, and there is a hatch sealing the only access. Make sure you have a very good security system before you tap the lava, not so much to protect your dwarves, but because we have very few of the imps and we don't want to lose any.
Currently, you have six dwarves because the herbalist got shivved by a kobold. We should get an immigrant wave soon, I traded a lot of mugs. We should get lots of little steel items next fall, so try to buy them up so we can smelt them down. I don't guess it matters, you could probably even tear down the depot to get them for free.
Please ask questions if there's anything you need to know!

Right, thanks :)

Time to get started then...

Edit: Or... I would. If I could. However it seems that my computer is refusing to run this.
Every twelve seconds or so when the game is unpaused it locks up for another three seconds.
Something like this happened in the last succession game I was in too (It refused to get off the loading screen), but I thought that was only because of the 30 z-level cliffs.

I guess till I get a better computer I should stop signing up for these, huh?
Oh well, good luck with your space ship, I'm just going to have to watch D:

So, skip you?

Also, if it finishes during my turn, can I pull the lever?

When it's finished, we'll have to have someone with a good computer launch it while recording it- and have a save ready for anyone who wants to try themselves.
Also, It would be fun to pull the lever in Adventurer mode too.
