After a few years of abandoning roguelikes, I decided to give Nethack another try (nope, I still suck at it), and came across the @Play column via the Nethack wikia.  And since I'm naturally a cautious player, I spent a bit of time reading the DF wiki to learn how to survive the winter.  My first fort actually did pretty well until I lost several hours of playing to a one-second power outage and started over.  I just found it a couple months ago but I think I'll still be playing this game for as long as Toady cares to work on it.  Here's hoping that'll be for years to come!

Home of Noctis, another freeware game, simply revolving around space exploration with no goals... but quite addicting and it has amassed a decent sized community.
And, much like DF, there's a long awaited new version sometime in the future. :P

I just heard it on the advice of a friend...I'm really not sure where he got it, could have been anywhere, but I'm sensing a common thread here with obsessions like SimAnt and Noctis.  I have a great love of roguelikes, I have a great love of way too much detail, and I have a fair love of wasting hours planning out elaborate things for no good reason!

By the way, Lightning4, that "Noctis V" thing is nothing but a brutal and vicious rumour that ought to be stamped out.  I visit that site about once a year, and every time, my youthful idealism dies a little more.

Wikipedia. I got bored with ADOM and looked up 'roguelike' on wikipedia to find something similar and of high quality. A link to wikipedia article on Dwarf Fortress was there, followed that one, became interested and followed the link to bay12games. And now I'm hooked.

Was browsing rec.games.roguelike.development (check it out, nice glimpse into the near future of roguelike development) and saw a post about DF, played a bit in adventure mode and dropped it for a while. Then a while later I played a bit in dwarf mode and was hooked.

A thread on /b/ that consisted of a screenshot, followed by somebody asking what it was, and somebody else actually answering seriously. I wanted to see what the heck it was about, so I googled it myself.
